Gabrielle is bored by the men and boys that swarm her. Young, old, fat, thin, intelligent and not, they throw themselves at her feet, try and convince her that they should be the one she chooses to be with, because only they are worthy of her. It is dull, it is repetitive, it is boring.
Draco is bored of the women he has affairs with. They are happy to see him in secret, to let him buy them expensive presents, to indulge in the exquisite fare of his house-elves. When he decides it's time to take the relationships public, they run, because Malfoy is not a name they want to be connected with.
They sit at opposite ends of an overly decorated ballroom, waiting for the night to end, praying for peace and quiet. Neither are there because they want to be. Draco, because it is expected of him as a Ministry employee, and more importantly, a subordinate of the man receiving the award, and Gabrielle because the whole family was expected, as a member of the extended family was receiving the award.
"I give you, Harry Potter."
Draco is getting ready to leave when he see's her. She looks miserable, and yet she is still beautiful. He drops his cloak to the back of his seat where it had been resting all night, and walked slowly across the room.
"Mademoiselle Delacour, may I have this dance?"
"No."
He snorted with amusement, shrugging his shoulders. "Suit yourself."
Turning away from her, he could feel her eyes on his back. He is not even half way across the room when her delicate hand is resting against his shoulder. Turning to look at her, he raised his eyebrow in question. "I apologise for my rudeness, Mr Malfoy. I'd be delighted to dance with you."
He doesn't ask how she knows his name. It is infamous, after all.
It is not until she is in his arms that he speaks again. "What changed your mind?"
The smile she gave him made his heart race. "You're the first man who heard the word no."
