Sebastian never planned on this, but after what he's experienced of life so far, he believes sometimes the most unforeseen things can be by far greatest.
The first time something surprises him is when he is four:
Sebastian doesn't understand why his father is being taken away from him, and at the time he is far too young to comprehend that it isn't normal for a father to treat his children the way Paul treats Sebastian and Faith.
And even though he doesn't get why it happened he's still glad it did, because after his father is gone he wakes up to syrupy smileys on his pancakes rather than his mother's heart-wrenching sobs and bloodied, swollen face.
The second time is when he's thirteen and the blond boy who gets bullied just like he does, stands up and slaps Dave in the face after being pushed to the ground for the third time in the last thirty seconds.
Dave was left dumbfounded by this and even more when Jeff's usually playful tone is taken over by an icy and protective, commanding one as he orders Dave to 'man up' and 'stop taking out his own problems on the two of them', because 'there are already enough people who give them a hard time for being who they are and people who are like them shouldn't join a crowd who does so.'
The third time is when he's fourteen and despite his terrified state, he manages to admit to his sister that the reason he doesn't want to go out on a date with her friends is because he doesn't like girls in that way; that's the way he feels about boys.
He didn't mean to say it, it just slipped out and he cursed himself over and over again for it; he was sure he'd be without a home by the end of the night.
Instead Sebastian feels a pair of arms wrap around him and her warm breath on his neck as she whispers "Can I set you up with a guy then? Or would you prefer I just brought home some gay porn and happen to leave it on my bed so you don't have to do the walk of shame of a horny fourteen year old?" he laughs at this, feeling okay about sharing who he is with someone (other than jeff) for the first time in his life.
None of those things could prepare him though; to the most unanticipated thing life ever threw at him. When Sebastian was seventeen that's when he met Hunter Clarington.
