Jem's shirt hung on the door. Will reached up, his hand shaking only slightly. His jaw was clenched, and his heart felt hollow. In less than a couple hours, James would belong to the girl they both loved. Will would lose Tessa - forever. "Will." Jem's voice was cheerful, bubbling with excitement. Will tried to swallow down the bile rising in his throat. "Can you give me the shirt?"
He unhooked the delicate blouse and carried it lightly between his fingers. Will spun around, pasting a secretly wounded but otherwise convincing smile onto his face. "Ready for the big day, James?" Jem was shining, and he looked healthy; healthier than he'd been in years. Perhaps it was the happiness that emanated from him. Will handed the shirt over, closing the cap on his bottled feelings. His brother's happiness mattered more.
