Before You Sang To Me
He held her in his arms. This felt right, but he knew she couldn't see that yet. So, they danced.
"Sarah, look at me," he pleaded. She wasn't meeting his gaze, looking behind him, to her left, anywhere but his eyes.
"I can't," she stated, a little uncertain of her voice.
"Why?"
"You haven't earned it."
Simple words. They said everything for her, but nothing was answered for him. He just had to push it further.
"I haven't what?"
"You heard me, Goblin King. You haven't earned it."
"And why is that?" Jareth asked confidently.
"I think," she sighed. "I think that's something a person must earn from me, like trust."
She hesitated, thinking for her next words. With a quick glance upward, she could see he was still uncertain. Okay, I can do this.
"When I look into a person's eyes, Jareth, I'm letting them see my soul, laying myself open to them. I need to know I can trust that person. And right now…"
"Do I frighten you?" A simple, unexpected question, and she couldn't help but answer.
"Yes, I can't trust you," and he began to sing to her. I'll just have to earn your trust then, my dear Sarah…
