Chapter One
I Want to Be Together
She sat alone, in the darkness.
Every once in a while a tear would blur her vision.
It was a storm. As with all storms there was thunder. It was loud.
In contrast, she was silent. It was her duty.
Tremors shot up her spine. It was loud. So loud.
She bit down harder on her lower lip. And still, she was silent.
It was so loud. Crack! And it scared her.
But her face, still that of a child, would not glisten as the lightning flashed.
She cried, veiled by darkness, hidden by a mask.
"Lan Fan?"
It was night. It was dark. He couldn't see. He couldn't see her.
He waited, desperate for an answer.
The silence was deafening. It was so loud. Too loud.
He sat up, silk sheets sliding from his body.
A light tore through the blackness. A mask. He saw a mask. He saw her.
Crack! It shattered the silence.
"Come here."
She sat, frozen. It was not her place.
He said it again, her name. It sounded warm, safe.
She sat, still. She sat, alone in the darkness. This was her place.
"It's dark." And it was, unbelievably so.
Lan Fan understood. She was not alone. He was in darkness also, with her.
"I am here, Young Master."
He smiled.
"Then stay here, Lan Fan. With me."
She nodded.
"And you can't leave me, okay?"
And from behind her mask, she smiled.
"Yes, sir."
"Can you promise me?"
She was silent.
"I promise I'll stay."
He peered over the edge of the bed.
Her breathing was even.
He smiled.
"You went to sleep without me."
He yawned.
"Now I have to sleep too."
"Don't break it."
She whispered slowly, afraid he would wake.
Crack. It buried her plea, under the mountain of stilling silence that followed.
"Nothing makes us more vulnerable than loneliness, except greed."
