Goodbye

Just a Family-verse one-shot on Arashi and Nanashi's last moment. (crowd goes "awwwwww…." XD) It popped into my head while I was listening to "Still Holding Out For You" today. (sobsob)

"Never thought I'd be in this place, it's someone else's life I'm living, wish I were living a lie…"

The glass object slams into the wall near the blonde Hokage's head, grazing his spiky blonde hair. He is immobile as his wife cries, holding their newborn son close and playing with the whisper soft hair on the top of his head. She looks up at him slowly: after all of the sobbing and screaming, her words are gentle, yet callused: distant and lost as well, "…What am I supposed to do without you?"
He looks to the side, the icy tone from the earlier fight disappears as he mutters, "I don't have a choice, Nanashi."
She looks up at him through tear filled blue eyes, unable to mask the shock and sadness in those bright eyes he had fallen in love with.
Sunflowers, he had said that day they met, she reminded him of a sunflower. He hated to see her clouded and dark like this. More than anything he wanted to pull her close and tell her that he would be okay. She kissed the baby's forehead softly, and he reaches for her playfully, his eyes wide open and playful. Nanashi looked up at him and then looked away, "I want to go with you."
His voice is firm, like one scolding a child, "No, Nanashi. You're too weak right now."
She shakes her head and coos softly to the baby, "You're gonna be great someday, Naruto. Even though you won't have a father or a mother."
He looks at her in confusion and horror darts across his handsome features for a moment, "Nanashi…"
"Just go…go save Konoha, just like you always do. Go be their Superman."
He walks over to her and hugs her tightly, burying his nose in her blonde hair, "Just…let me hold on for a second more…just a second more…"
She looks away dully and kisses Naruto's forehead one last time before handing him to Arashi. He whispers, "I love you more than the world" and disappears in a puff of white smoke.

It is six hours later when the door swings open. Nanashi jumps out of the bed, excited, but slowly sinks back down as lightning crashes and reveals her husband's student, Kakashi Hatake, "Nanashi-sama?"
She looks up slowly: there is a picture in one hand and a tiny bracelet in the other—Naruto's hospital bracelet. Kakashi sighs, "…He's…"
"I know Kakashi."
"Are you going to get Naruto?"
She shakes her head, and looks away, "…I can't."
"You can't?"
"No, I can't, dammit. I can't face him, not after letting his father run off and kill himself." Tears drip down Nanashi's whiskered cheeks as she slowly stands up, gathering the small picture in her arms, "I'm leaving. Take care of Naruto…"
"Nanashi-sama, you can't just—"
"Yes, I can." She looks back at him, and the anguish across her features is so visible it hurts even him, "I can. And I will
With that said, she disappeared out of the doorway. And, that was the last time anyone in Konoha saw the whisker-girl with the bleach blonde hair.
