Disclaimer: I do not own Percy Jackson.
"Mommy," A high-pitched voice that Sally loved rang, as her son entered the kitchen.
Sally stopped cutting the carrots she'd been preparing, and glanced down at Percy, who was watching her intently with his sea green eyes.
"Yes, honey?" Sally asked, kneeling down to match Percy's height.
He smiled at her, and Sally's heart melted at the warmth of the smile. He was so innocent and sweet, and Sally couldn't help but recall the same way Poseidon had smiled at her, six years ago.
"Can I dress up as a superhero for Halloween?"
Sally sighed, her heart slowly sinking to her chest. "Percy, I'm sorry-"
She broke off when she saw his shoulders slump, and his smile turn into a frown. He stared at his feet, his messy hair falling over his face.
"Why can't I?"
Because it's too dangerous, she wanted to say. Because Gabe wouldn't allow it, because you'd end up getting hurt either way, Percy, and that's the last thing I'd want to do.
But she couldn't say that.
She decided to lie. "Honey, I have to work that day. I can't take you out."
He pouted, and Sally's heart felt heavy at the fact that her son couldn't live a normal life. "Okay, Mommy. I'm sorry."
Sally hugged him, and ran her hands through his jet black hair that he'd inherited from his father. "No, I'm sorry, Percy. I promise we can do something later."
"I really wanted to be a superhero," he whispered softly, his tone making Sally's heart contract.
"You are a hero," Sally told him. "You don't need a costume to prove that."
He looked up at her, wide-eyed. "Really? I'm a hero?"
Sally nodded. "You're a hero, Percy."
"But I've never saved the world!" He exclaimed, his eyes even wider.
"You will," Sally said. "You're my hero."
He grinned at her, a toothy and cute grin that had Sally smiling along with him. "Yay!"
Sally stood up, and felt gratefulness rush through her as she looked at the boy standing in front of her. He'd be amazing when he got older. She knew it. Sally looked at the carrots on the counter that she'd left, and made a quick decision.
She set the carrots to the side, and lifted Percy up, and set him on the table.
He watched her with a curious gaze, swinging his legs on the table. "What are you doing, mommy?"
Sally opened a cabinet that she usually kept locked when Gabe was around. Though, since he was out "partying", she figured it was fine to keep it unlocked. Pulling out raw cookie dough, icing, and blue dye, Sally turned to Percy. "How do you feel about making Halloween cookies, Percy?"
His squeal after that, Sally decided, was the sweetest thing she'd ever heard.
A/N: I suck at this updating thing, and I apologize. But I liked this super short story! What did you guys think (even though we're almost a month past Halloween..haha)? Let me know. :) Keep smiling, xxx.
