Fox Mulder's eyes shot open, and he fought to control his breathing. He could still feel the pain of the beatings his interrogators gave him and the agony of knowing the he would never know his son. The fear of death and of losing the all important battle still hung with his. The loneliness of his life was still part of him.
But as he looked over at his sleeping wife, he realized it had all been just a dream.
He was a child psychologist, not an FBI agent.
His sister was a lawyer at a firm in New York City. She hadn't been taken by aliens as a young girl.
He had met Dana Scully at the hospital where they both worked, not when she had been assigned to be his partner.
In October of 1994, he and Dana were planning their wedding. She had not been abducted.
In early 1997, Dana was carrying their daughter, Emily, not dying of cancer.
Their son, William, wasn't anything more than human, and he slept in the nursery down the hall, not at some adopted family's home.
All the horrors and pain that he remembered as if they had happened to him weren't real. It was all just a bad science fiction movie plot.
It was all just a dream.
