"Your condition is detoriating rapidly" the doctor stated calmly, and turned to the documents a nurse had just handed him.

The boy in front of him sat up on the hospital bed, and took off his covers. He swung his legs off the bed, walked over towards the door, and halted.

"How much longer?" he didn't bother looking back.

"Not even a year, at most" replied the doctor unhesitantly.

The boy slid open the door, air brushing back black strands of his hair, and walked out. His footsteps could be heard ringing in the corridor.

If I had to choose a colour for my life before you entered, it would have been charcoal grey.

A dark, misty colour, devoid of any emotion. Not beautiful like black. Not pure like white. Bleak.

Every day, I would will for time to travel faster. So that I could leave this prison of a school. This school filled with naïve students, who didn't know a thing about reality.

And every night I would be forced to execute the shady jobs of the academy.

He arrived in his room a little past midnight. It was quiet, dark. He shut the door behind him with a slight click, and leaned against it. Slipping his hands out of his pockets, he clutched at the area of his chest, behind which lay his heart.

The pain was overpowering.

He slid down onto his knees, and bent over, gasping.

Closing his eyes tight, the blurry patches of black engulfed his vision.

It was a monotonous cycle.

The darkness smothered me. Life was exhausting. Breathing felt tedious.

I hated them. The adults of the academy. They couldn't be trusted. Every one of them acted like they cared. But when push came to shove they would throw you away like something rotten. But that's what they were. Rotten.

Beep-Beep-Beep-

The doctor rushed in, his white coat flying behind him. He shouted a few orders, and the nurses got to work.

He pulled on his gloves and began treatment…

When you entered my life, I dismissed you as one of the rest of the students here. Except it turned out you were worse. Your constant wailing and sniveling irritated me. Your laughing and giggling was annoying. You created a scene wherever you went.

But what irked me most was how you ignored the unspoken rule of keeping clear from me.

No matter how many times I pushed you away and threatened you, you didn't learn. You always came back, with that bright smile of yours that seemed to blow away the darkness surrounding me. You blabbered on about senseless topics, and would occasionally gaze up at me, eyes sparkling.

Everything was silent. Time seemed to have frozen, as she watched him from behind thick glass.

The tubes. The oxygen mask. None of it suited him.

And more than anything, she wished desperately that she could be there with him. To hold his hand. To feel his warmth.

She needed reassurance.

Time would travel fast with you.

I got used to your presence. Your optimistic character.

You lit up my colourless world and before I knew it, you had found a place in my heart.

I won't let you go.

Beads of sweat glistened under the harsh glare of the operating light.

"Forceps", a gloved hand was held out

"His Sp02 level is decreasing"said a nurse, as the instrument was handed to him.

That's what I had thought.

But, it's impossible for me. In a condition like mine, I'll only end up crushing that smile of yours. That smile that was supposed to be protected at all costs.

"It's not working"

Constantly on the verge of death. Avoiding it here. Dodging it there. It was bound to catch up.

Beeeeeeeeep-

Just not so soon.

My time is up, and I leave you to the one man I can trust. Ruka will take better care of you than I was ever able to.

"NATSUME!", a single cry rung out

I love you…Mikan.
