On her way to school, little Jane Lane saw Kevin Thompson. She smirked to herself. Time to have some fun. She turned and called out to her classmate. "Oh, Kevin."
"Yeah, Jane?"Kevin was sort of friends with Jane, she was pretty smart.
"Look Kevin, a football." She tried to make the football sound as tempting as double chocolate brownies as she held it out to him.
"Cool!" Kevin said and made a jump to get at the coveted object.
"No," Jane said, in a scolding tone. "I'll hold the ball and you'll kick it."
"Okay!" Kevin nodded up and down, practically bubbling with enthusiasm.
Kevin made a running start and Jane quickly removed the football. Kevin went flying!
Jane winced as she heard a loud thud, it sounded like Kevin had landed on his head. Jane braced herself for Kevin to run back screaming at her, he was going to be furious.
Instead, Jane was surprised to hear a muffled, slightly slurred voice cry out, "Cool! I'm the QB!"
Little Jane Lane could not begin to foresee the damage she had done.
Little Quinn fluffed out her hair and moved a quick twirl before she approached the next house. She looked so cute in her Sally Brown costume, the people just *had* to give her some candy. After all, that was the rule of Halloween. Little girls dress up and try to look as beautiful as they can and people just give them things! How great was that system?
Of course, she thought, looking at her companion, there were some people who just didn't *get* it. Why her sister insisted on wearing that… that *thing* when it was so… weird was beyond her. Quinn walked a few steps ahead being associated with Daria.
"Quinn," her mommy called from behind her, "Don't wander off to far, your sister and I can't keep up." Quinn sighed and slowed her pace, though she still walked a little ahead of her family.
Soon the family reached the first house. Quinn put on her most winning smile and said cheerfully, "Trick or Treat!" Her sister's recitation of the phrase was more subdued.
"What did you get?" Helen asked, as her kids left the house.
Quinn eagerly looked in t her bag. "I got two chocolate chip cookies."
Daria lifted the heavy load from her bag. "I got a rock."
Helen frowned. "Don't worry sweetie, I'm sure you'll do better at the next house."
The little group rounded the bend to the next house soon enough and were leaving in only a matter of minutes.
"Look Mommy," Quinn chirruped, "I've got gum! Like all the big girls at school have"
"That's nice, Quinn." Helen responded absently. "But what did your sister get?" Helen's full attention was on Daria.
"I got a rock." Daria replied morosely, hefting the offending object in her hand.
Quinn turned and gave her a sister a winning smirk. Clearly, Trick-or-Treating was not for all people.
