"Stevie, I don't know what to do. Sandy and Pony in one week?" Soda said as he leaned forward on his stool into his hands so Steve wouldn't be able to see he was ready to cry.

Soda had been halfway through his shift when Sandy had come by, asking to talk to him. Steve had covered for him, not expecting that by the time Soda got back he'd be at his own breaking point. Now Soda and Steve sat on the stools in the gas station even though it was way past closing time. Soda felt safe in the gas station, he loved the smell of the gasoline mixed with the other smells of spring. When Steve had suggested they hung out here for a little Soda had agreed. He didn't want to go home and have everyone see him break down. Not that Soda was ashamed. No, he just needed to sort things out for himself at first, with the help of his friend.

"I'm gonna be honest with you buddy," Steve sighed. "I never expected this from Sandy, and I'm not gonna go off calling her a slut on you," Soda's head snapped up and he glared. "I said I wasn't going to! But I don't think Sandy loved you as much as you loved her. She was a real nice girl and all, and she liked you a helluva lot, damn near love I think. But it wasn't, not for her at least."

"But I loved her," Soda cried. Steve put an arm around Soda, he wasn't too good at the whole comforting bit, but come on, how unfeeling can you be if Sodapop Curtis is your best friend?

"I know you did," Steve replied gently, trying to banish the cruelty that ran low in his voice most times, the tone that Ponyboy hated so much. Truthfully Steve wished it wasn't there. Sometimes.

"But let me tell you something else," Soda rubbed at his eyes furiously, begging those tears to disappear. "If Sandy could leave you the way she did, she had no clue what she was giving up."

"She didn't want to go!" Soda shot back. Steve rubbed Soda's arm trying to calm him down.

"There's a girl waiting for you somewhere, I don't know where the hell she is but there's gonna be a girl who does know how great you are, and that you would never do what Sandy did." Steve said in a low tone. Soda didn't bother trying to stop the tears anymore, because they were coming whether he liked it or not.

"Well if there's anything to find good about this week it's one thing," Soda said after a long silence.

"Yeah, what's that?" Steve asked.

"That no matter what the hell happens; you'll be my buddy here with me." Soda said, smiling slightly.

"Only because I know it'd be the same the other way around."
