A/N: Just a random drabble I decided to post. It's not beta'd or anything, so I apologize for any mistakes. I know, I know, I was supposed to write a happy USUK fic, but I've had this for awhile, so... yeah. Enjoy. Reviews make me happy. :]
Warnings: Bit of angst, one-sided!UsUk, hinted FrUk
It wasn't seeing them together that bothered him, not at all.
It was the not knowing. It was the ache in his chest at seeing them so close. It was the wandering thoughts.
He could see those emerald eyes light up from afar – but not because of him. He saw that rare, genuine smile – but directed at someone else. He thought of what could have been, knowing it was his fault it hadn't turned out that way. And it hurt, it hurt so much.
Alfred remembered the times when he was the reason for Arthur's happiness. He remembered when Arthur smiled at him like that, and that warm look in his eyes as he offered his hand.
There was a time when Alfred thought they'd always be happy together, that nothing could stand in their way, but he was wrong. Alfred couldn't let it go.
Alfred wondered what Arthur thought about him, if he thought about him at all. As he watched Arthur chat with the nation he claimed to hate, he couldn't help but feel as though he were forgotten. He was second place.
Or maybe third.
Even fourth.
How far back, Alfred didn't know, and maybe he didn't want to know the truth.
Perhaps it was jealousy that wanted him to storm over there and demand answers. Alfred's head told him he was right to do so, he hadn't done anything wrong!
It was his heart that kept him rooted to his spot.
Second best or not, Arthur was still first to him. If Arthur was happy with the circumstances, how could he ruin that?
All he wanted was for Arthur to be happy, and he looked so, so happy.
So Alfred was happy too.
The blond smiled, wishing there was rain to hide the tear that rolled down his cheek. He turned and left the two alone together.
If he'd never be Arthur's first choice, that'd be okay. As long as he'd get thought of, just a bit, he could be happy.
Alfred would be there if he was ever needed. Whether it was a friendly face, a drive home from the bar or a shoulder to cry on, he'd always be there.
Just for Arthur.
