Welcome to Random Moments- Hana! If you are familiar with my writing you know that I have two full length (or possibly more than full length) books on this site, telling Hana Pedrad's story. Hana's story is Pre-Divergent and canon to the original books. (Dauntless Gray and The Blackest Shade of Gray)
Random Moments- Hana works within both the Divergent World and the Dauntless Gray world, which means that if you haven't read my two stories, you may not recognize some of the characters I created in them. I want everyone to be able to read these, so I am going to try to give a brief explanation of who those people are and any background information you need on them as they show up. Many of these characters have been "alive" in my mind for so long, that I may from time to time forget that they aren't canon. If that happens, please let me know and I'll try to add an explanation as to who they are.
This story will contain scenes from within Veronica Roth's published world, only from Hana's point of view. They may or may not line up with quotes from the story (like the Random Voices do), but they will line up with the story line.
If there is anything you would like to see, let me know. I don't make any promises, but... I'll see what I can do. There are several scenes that are already rattling around in my head that made me decide to do this. In one of the last reviews to The Blackest Shade of Gray, Divergent46Fourtris mentioned that this first scene that I'm publishing is one they had pictured, too! So, this is the one that I am doing first.
These are called Random, so they aren't necessarily going to be published in the order of the story.
Right now, I am working on my next "book" within the Divergent world, but while I am working on that, I'm plan to do quick updates to my Random Voices and the new Random Moments that you are currently reading about once a month. Once the next story is ready to be published, I'll put these on hiatus again while I concentrate on that.
If you have the time, please leave me a review and let me know what you think of them.
My characters:
Nick- Nick is Hana's second husband and cousin of her first husband, Eli.

Visiting Day –Divergent Chapter Fifteen
"Why are you so nervous?" Nick, husband, puts his arms around me in an attempt to calm me down after I drop the plain black chain I was putting on when he came in the room.
"It's Visiting Day." It's both a truth and a lie. It is Visiting Day, and I am very nervous about seeing someone, but it isn't the person he assumes: my son, Uriah, who stayed in Dauntless. It's the fact that, because her daughter is now in my faction, my very dear friend Natalie will be visiting today. She, not Leeann, Nick's sister, is my best friend, despite the prohibition of having friends outside of our faction. We became friends even though we never lived in the same faction- at least never at the same time.
Nick turns me around so I am facing him. "Hana, it's not like Uriah changed factions and we are headed somewhere else. You see him every day across the cafeteria."
"I know." I bite my lip, hoping he doesn't realize I'm trying to figure out a plausible explanation. "I never really thought Zeke would go anywhere, but Uriah… Uri is a different story."
"You worried about that, too? Why didn't you tell me? We could have talked and…"
I put a finger over his lips to stop him. "And it wouldn't have changed anything. His grandfather still came from Amity, his aunt still went to Amity, his dad…" I stop suddenly. It's been years since I've almost slipped, years since I've allowed myself to think about Eli, my first husband, and the fact that he was Divergent.
One of Nick's eyebrows creeps up to his hairline like he is questioning why I would bring up Eli in that chain of people, but he doesn't question me. He just kisses my fingertip, and I move it so he can speak. "Zeke had all of that, too."
"There's a difference between them, and you know it," I answer defensively.
Nick draws me in close and holds me. It's like he understands my fears for Uriah. Only I know he doesn't, because the word 'Divergent' has never been used in his presence. He doesn't understand that just by being himself, my youngest lives his life on the edge. He doesn't know that there are people out there who want to kill him and other people like him.
Of course, my son doesn't know it, either.
And if it wasn't for my long-ago association with Natalie, I wouldn't know it, either.
Nick kisses my forehead and releases me. "I'll tell you what. You go down to the Chasm so you don't miss a moment with him. Zeke had a late shift in the control room, so he could be off today. I'll go check on him and make sure he is up."
"Thank you." I reach up on tip-toes and kiss him. I'm going to miss time with Uriah. I already know that at some point, I'm going to slip away and talk to Natalie. I don't know what I would do if her daughter hadn't transferred to Dauntless. I would have to find another way to contact her. There is something going on here in Dauntless. Between my job in records and Nick's job in requisitions, I've seen enough pieces to know something is going on. I'm just not quite sure what it is. I am sure that whatever it is, Natalie, with her contacts on the outside, needs to know about it.
She stands by the railing to the Chasm, the perfect Abnegation, dressed to be unobtrusive but standing out in the chaos of Dauntless. I look around the Pit, just to make sure Uriah isn't here yet.
I'm relieved that he's not. I walk to the Chasm and stand next to Natalie, facing the Chasm, while she faces away, watching for her child to appear. "I need to talk to you."
Natalie's nod of agreement is so slight that if I wasn't watching her from the corner of my eye, I would have missed it.
"Your old room is now taken, and I'm afraid we would be seen going down to the Chasm room, do you remember the hallway where Jude gave me the concussion?"
Again, there is the almost-invisible nod.
"Can we meet there, when you are finished seeing your daughter?"
Natalie takes a deep breath and gives a small Abnegation smile as she nods this time.
I see Four, Zeke's friend and Uriah's trainer, standing a little further down the railing and wander over to speak to him. "How is this year going?"
Four starts a little and then turns to me. "I'm not Uri's trainer."
I give a small laugh. "Lauren is. I know, but once upon a time, one of my best friends was a trainer. I know sometimes it is a tough job. What I'm really asking is, how is this year going for you?" I leave out the fact that my friend was Amar's mother - Amar, who was Four's trainer. I try not to think about either Amar or his mother, Jazz, too much. There is too much guilt involved thinking about them.
Four looks at me for a minute, as if he is trying to judge how serious I am. "It's a rough year. The changes that they've made aren't completely fair."
Now it is my turn to nod. Working with leadership, even in a minor capacity, I'm aware of the changes and exactly how unfair they are. "You'll do the best you can."
"Of course."
It's my turn to study him for a minute. He was accused of being Divergent, and although he was cleared, I think he knows about them. Do I dare hint at my fears for Uriah? Will he protect my son, like Amar tried to protect him? "Do you still do all of the fear simulations?"
Four stiffens. "I do."
"That was Jazz's- my friend's- least favorite part of the job."
"Now that we can't stop fights, I'm not sure I have a favorite part of the job," Four mutters.
"I can understand that." I take a deep breath and take a risk. "Of course, Uri is so Amity that at times I wonder if he will see his fears as much more than a joke."
Unintentionally, Four's head jerks so he's looking straight at me. He levels those peculiar blue eyes at me, as if he is searching me to see if I'm really hinting at what I'm hinting at. I return his gaze just as steadily. I want him to realize I am serous. "I'll make sure he takes it seriously."
I let out my breath slowly and smile my old Abnegation smile at him. "Thank you."
Four doesn't acknowledge my thanks, but instead tells me right before he returns to looking broodingly at the Chasm, "Uriah has arrived."
I try to enjoy my time with Uriah, I really do. But as I listen to the conversation, I covertly watch Natalie and Tris as they make their rounds. They talk to Four and then to some of the other transfers and their families. When I see what looks like a near-altercation, I start preparing my short escape. Natalie isn't going to be able to stay somewhere that she causes conflict.
She steers Tris away from her friends, and they disappear down a hallway that leads to an area of Dauntless not heavily covered by cameras.
"I just remembered Wyatt had a couple of records I was supposed to leave for him. I pulled them, but I can't remember if I left them on his desk." I try to look worried. Wyatt, the leader in charge of the records room, is not known for his understanding nature - quite the reverse.
"Go, Mom. Uncle Nick, Zeke, and I will meet you in the cafeteria. I'm sure we can find something to do while we wait for you." Uriah tries to look innocent as he urges me to check on it.
I try not to laugh at my son. He is well-known in our group of friends for his love of Dauntless cake. "Don't eat more than two pieces without me." I take two steps and it dawns on m that all three of them are known for this. Zeke will take it as a personal challenge to see how many pieces he can eat while Uriah only eats two. I turn around to the three of them. My finger points to each of them in turn. "Any of you!"
Nick's laughter follows me as I head quickly to meet Natalie.
I beat Natalie to the dead-end hallway where no cameras reach. I pace the width while I try to figure out exactly how to word my concerns.
Natalie looks over her shoulder, like she's trying to make sure that Tris didn't follow her. She starts without preamble, "What do you know?"
"I know that I've spent the last two weeks going through all of the Dauntless birth, death, and transfer records for the last fifty years, checking it against our census records. I know that Nick was given a code for a new vaccine= or tracker, they keep changing the description of it- and that his order had to match my number plus twenty-five in case something happened." I bite my lower lip worriedly when I'm finished.
Natalie's voice is sharp. "Vaccine or tracker? They've called it both?"
"That's what made me suspicious at first. How can you get those two things mixed up?"
"I don't know." She presses her lips together. "You're right that something is going on. Andrew let me know that the council feels it is time to let everyone know about the outside world. I checked with my contact outside and they told me to tell the council no, but Marcus won't listen and he has such a firm control on the council..."
"That no one will go against him," I whisper.
"Exactly. As soon as I passed that on, my boss and my contacts on the outside have gone silent. This scares me Hana. I don't know what is going on." She sighs. "I'm not used to being in the dark."
"Something big is about to happen," I say unnecessarily.
"Something big is about to happen," she confirms. "If I need your help...?"
I take a deep breath. Eli made me promise before he died that if anything happened to him, I would quit working for Natalie. He was worried about something happening to me and the boys being left without a parent. I haven't done anything for her since his death, and Nick knows nothing about my past association with Natalie. If he remembers her at all, it is from her stay in Dauntless before she went to Abnegation. He knows her only as Leeann's friend who left.
Both of the boys have left the house. "I want to be able to tell Nick something." Not telling Eli almost ruined our marriage at one point in time.
Natalie presses her lips together again. "What do you want to tell him? Never mind. The outside world isn't talking to me. I am going to handle this my way- the way I would have handled it with Eli if I would have been allowed to. I trust you to keep it to a minimum and to let him know he can't tell anyone else."
"Thank you." I straighten my shoulders and look her straight in the eyes. "What do you need from me?"
