While She Slept

He always made sure to be as quiet as possible. He wouldn't dream of waking her up. Of making his presence known. There were a few times when she was already awake but he just kept going as carefully as he could past her tent, hoping she wouldn't notice. Every night, when most of the camp slept, he would walk past her tent. A sideward glance would give him assurance that she was alright.

Once or twice, when he knew no one could see him, he would stop before her humble beach abode and pretend to think or light a cigarette. At this point his eyes would skim inside and fall upon her sleeping body.

He would watch her breathing. See her stomach go gently up and down, her soft lips parted slightly and releasing small puffs of air.

He would gaze lovingly as those puffs of air wafted through her dark hair, moving a few stray strands from her face and making them dance and flutter to the ground.

He would take comfort in seeing her freckles scattered across her face and think of how beautiful her green eyes were even when they were hidden behind pale eyelids.

Then he would move on.

When he left her to go on the raft he knew he would miss seeing her sleep at night.

But she had no idea she would miss having him there as she slept as much as she did.
