Once, they had the potential to be friends. A time before names were known, alliances clarified in the tentative air between them.
But - this was before the names were revealed, the alliances defined on the staircase in front of those heavy wooden doors leading into the Great Hall. A hand withdrawn, a rivalry born.
It separated them as thoroughly as if they had never met, never had the chance to form a fragile bond too soon broken by uncontrollable outside forces. It was like an ocean divided their separate sides, unreachable, untouchable.
Not meant to be together.
But - they were, even if no one knew it at the time.
Their strained tentative bond kept stretching, irritating already short tempers. Fights and skirmishes broke out, testament to their fight against what was meant to be. A struggle further inflaming the bitter starting point of their relationship.
It lasted for years - stretching past dragon hatchlings, mislabeled heirs, hippogriffs, badges, and songs. Minor battles that reflected the turmoil within of two enemies who just wanted to be friends.
Good intentions soured quickly in the beginning, but the journey back into the light is difficult.
It helps if there is an incentive to speed up the process.
Fate decided their petty squabbles had gone on enough, so She pushed them together.
Literally.
Courtesy of Peeves, Harry found himself falling down the stairs one day, unable to catch himself with his book-filled arms. By chance, Draco walked past the staircase just as Harry tumbled down.
They ended up in a sprawled heap at the bottom of the staircase. Cackling, Peeves drifted over to look at the disaster he had wrought.
He was quiet for a moment, shocked at what he found, before dashing off, quickly composing a "witty" rhyme of what he had seen.
Dazed, the pair pulled apart, shocked at the sheer amount of force behind the chaste kiss. Throwing a week glare at the other, the pair separated to go to their next classes.
Authoress's Note: I hope you'll forgive me when I leave such a "cliffhanger" at the end of this story. I don't want to write this piece anymore...I started on October 2, but the ideas aren't flowing.
I'm considering a second chapter to this fanfiction - hence, the incomplete status thus far. The title might change as well - this may end up being a "Physics"-related series.
