Merrilee
Pink. Completely pink. So pink that even though she was so flat that she could've been a little boy, it had to be a girl.
That was my first thought of her. The Eidolon named Merrilee.
"What can you do?"
"Lots of things. I'm ready to take on anything!"
Blindingly cheerful. Naively optimistic. And so pink.
I couldn't count the number of times I almost died because of her.
"But, it looked so cute!"
"What about that is cute!? It just tore apart and ate three people!"
"It'll be fine! I'm sure if we just talk to it—"
I couldn't believe this girl. I didn't want her to be my partner. She never stopped smiling, even when she screwed up her defensive spells, even when her healing magic did nothing but make the cut stop itching—
Even when she accidentally froze my legs in front of a giant Wolfman—
Put too much salt in the soup—
Forgot to bank the fire and nearly burned down a forest—
Clung to my cloak as we ran from a mob of vicious Goblins—
Drooled on my shoulder as we slept underneath a full moon—
What Eidolon? What powerful summoned spirit?
She was just an idiot, wasn't she?
"What are you thinking about?"
"Nothing. Go to sleep."
"...Sorry. For troubling you."
"..."
I didn't care. In the end, it didn't change the fact that we were bonded together. Partners. A team. She was my right hand. But I already had my own hand. So, of course she'd be a bother.
But, even then...
I...
"Run away! I'll be fine!"
Always smiling. Like she's being warmed by a breath of sunshine.
"I'll be fine..." She smiled. The monster opened its mouth, saliva shining on its razor-like teeth.
Just an idiot. An annoying, bothersome idiot.
"I told you I'd be fine...I told you to run away..."
The mouth had snapped shut. And now, there were wet drops falling like rain onto my face.
"You'll be fine? Don't joke around. You're just a half. The stupid half."
Why are you always smiling? Why do you always look so bright?
"I can't trust you."
"I'll...I'll heal you. I promise. I swear! I'll save you and then we'll..."
Cheerful. Bright. And pink.
Is that what a smile feels like?
"...Are you doing that?"
Snow drifted down from the sky. Melting softly, like a kiss on my cheeks.
"No...you can't even use ice magic right."
"I'll heal you...I'll do it. It'll be fine, everything will be alright."
More drops fell. More snow fell. And my eyes started to close.
Say...
Merrilee?
It's cold. And dark.
I'm scared. It's all black, everywhere.
...
Warm like sunshine. Soft like snow. And pink like a mother's touch.
Say...
Merrilee?
Can you smile for me too?
A/N: An old story I wrote for one of Aura Kingdom's events. I haven't touched the game for a while, but Merrilee wasn't as useless as I thought she'd be...
