Ari watched the rise and fall of the winged girls chest as she slept. She was probably the most beautiful being he'd ever seen. What's more, she was his. Maximum Ride was his, not Fang's and sure as hell not Itex's. For the first time in his life he was free, they both were, and he was on the top of the world.
Max stirred and rolled over in her sleep, snuggling closer to Ari. Ari breathed in her scent, light, airy, the way the sky smelled at dawn. Ari brushed a strand of light hair from her face and kissed her on the forehead gently. Max's lips twitched into a small smile at that, and Ari's heart melted.
"G'mornin'," Max sighed as she opened her eyes sleepily.
Ari smiled at her, she was just so… amazing. "Morning," he said quietly, as if speaking in more than a whisper would break the spell.
"Ari? You ok?" Max asked after a time. Oh… Ari had been staring at her.
Then Ari done something incredibly stupid. And not in that good "Jack-Sparrow-sorta-kinda-flirting-with-Will-Turner" sort of way either. No the full-on, "horribly-awful-I-wish-I-could-just-die-now" kind of way.
"Max?" Ari asked tensely. Max made a little noise of interest. "Do you love me?"
As soon as the words left his lips he knew the answer, and he really didn't want to hear it. Max stiffened slightly giving the question some serious thought. After a long moment she finally answered.
"No," it was apologetic and full of remorse. It wasn't that she didn't like Ari. It wasn't that she didn't want to love him, she did, truly she did, but she just … couldn't.
"I love you," Ari stated. Short, simple, emotionless.
"I know," Max supplied, there were tears in her voice that Ari didn't acknowledge as he stood and dressed, leaving behind the only good thing in his life.
