Shattered Silence

Prologue: Too Damn Quiet (chapter title may change)

The night sky above planet Novus was really a sight to behold. Stars and auras of yellows, among other colors, flitted throughout the darkness. The sound of some of the smaller critters that roamed the continents could be heard as they wandered around searching for food and whatnot, but the night was otherwise as quiet as quiet can get.

'It's just too damn quiet...' thought a masculine figure atop a grassy hill. His dark brown eyes stared at the colored darkness above him. He was just laying there alone; nobody else was anywhere near him, unless the MAU, Catapult variant, that was powered off behind him actually counted as a person. The headquarters of the Union was just a short walk over a bridge, and even now as he sat himself back upright, he could not even see any of the newly added cadets trying to earn their stripes while they killed the lesser ct.

Suddenly the young Driver felt a brush against his back and a graceful pair of arms wrap around his shoulders. He grinned and hugged back the invisible appendages just as the figure uncloaked and her figure came into view. She smiled at him before setting herself down next to him. The two just sat there holding each other and watched the sky; the night was still very young.

"Cairo... I'm the Sniper here and yet you are able to sneak away from the HQ in that huge MAU of yours better than I can when I cloak," the girl said while she sighed and placed her head on his shoulder, her red hair draping down over it. He laced the fingers of their right hands together softly and rested his head against hers in quick but gentle succession; his short blonde hair mixing with her red.

"I'm sorry, Elli, but you know how I just like to come out here and... think. Besides, Tack here needed to get out." he made a gesture behind him at the MAU. "He hasn't been out of the hanger in quite a while."

She nuzzled his arm a bit, "Still, I wish you would at least let me know before you go and disappear on me. You're lucky I know where you like to head off to, Mister."

Cairo laughed and kissed the top of her head, "I'll try to remember that, hun. Now maybe if..."

Suddenly, the blaring sound of the emergency alarm echoed from the Bellato Union Headquarters throughout the night sky. The two lovers jumped out of their calm and peaceful state and quickly readied themselves. Either those Accretian toasters were on the move again or the Corites decided to actually stage an attack for once; either way, Cairo and Elli needed to get back to the HQ as fast as the could.

"Stay safe, Cai. I love you," Elli said as she gave him a last hug and kiss, "Finish what you were saying after all of this is over."

Elli began to sprint back to the headquarters in order to meet up with her Sniper division, just as the sounds of Cairo's MAU, Tack, could be heard in the night as it powered back up. He had to get back to the hanger and get his own instructions. Commander Aircaf would be furious if he was any later than he already would be after driving back.

This is a war; anything can happen
