not a song fic by an means but I was partly inspired by Rihanna's Umbrella. I've had that stuck in my head ever since I first heard it a couple weeks ago.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was raining so hard that evening that Iruka felt like he could go swimming down the streets of the village. He stood under his blue and grey dolphin-print umbrella besides Ichiraku's Ramen Stand watching the water pour from the clouds and create puddles that children would come by and splash in before being chased away by their angry mothers. He laughed to himself, remembering when he would do that when he was younger. Though since he didn't have a mother to chide him, he'd stay out too long and catch cold, making others sick the next day at school.

The stand was now closed after Iruka and Naruto had had their fill, so he stood silently in peace admiring the rain sliding off his umbrella to the ground. From the corner of his eye, he saw Hatake Kakashi tudging his way through the mud, concentrating only on reading and not getting his book wet by covering the top with a party-gloved hand. He slowly progressed towards Ichiraku's, looking up once to make sure it wasn't opened, then passed Iruka without a word.

Iruka sighed, hoping Kakashi would take notice of him for once, though he figured he just melted into the background of the stand and the rain. But in the next second, Kakashi stopped and turned around, yelling, "Yo! You mind, sensei?"

Iruka's eyes widened, then shook his head. "Come on." He held his umbrella higher as Kakashi came over and scooted next to him, dropping his one hand now that he had Iruka's protection over his book.

"Thanks," he muttered.

Iruka glanced at him sideways, smiling. "No problem."

They stood in silence, save for the hard splattering of the rain on tiles and rooftops, the wild billowing through windows and cracked doorways. Iruka admired the scene before him and felt a hint of warmth from his fellow sensei. After a few minutes, Kakashi put his book away and offered to hold the umbrella.

"Oh. Ok… Thanks, Kakashi."

"Mm."

He felt Kakashi's hand slide over his own as he took hold of the umbrella and swiftly tucked his hand into his pocket.

"What you doing out here?"

"Hm? Oh. I like the rain, that's all."

"Mm."

"You?"

"Got back from training when it started to pour."

"Oh."

They stood quietly for a while more until Iruka's heart started beating hard through his chest with a new thought. He slid his hand slowly from his pocket, twitching slightly as he raised it and lightly gripped Kakashi's wrist.

Kakashi turned his head to look at him with his right eye and smiled through his mask. Iruka felt himself flush furiously and looked away until he felt Kakashi remove he hand from his wrist and throw it behind him to grip his waist. The other blushed again and held onto him tight under the umbrella. And then Iruka felt him kiss his forehead above his hitai-ate through the cloth. How much redder could he get?

Iruka could tell Kakashi was smirking again under his mask, though he wished he had removed his mask to kiss him. Ah well, why was he complaining?

They returned to doing nothing under the umbrella, under the rain, under the dark sky with Iruka's fingers twitching against Kakashi's back. He was glad they were friends and he could offer the Copy-Nin shelter like this.

"Thanks," Kakashi muttered as he stepped out from under, giving Iruka his umbrella back.

"Any time."
