Left Behind

Down in the bowels of Lestava castle, the echoes of a thousand screams rang out. No-one ventured there anymore- the touches and whispers of the ghosts of the Chess Pieces had driven the living away. Children dared each other to stay the night in the old dungeons, and those brave enough to accept were never the same again. A kind of hell had taken over the dark corridors.

Chimera was somewhere down there, as was Halloween. Rolan's soul had nearly joined the unquiet masses, and sometimes the ghost of a tall, sallow, man with yellow skin would be seen at the entrance of the underground realm- looking, it seemed, searching for something that couldn't be found in the darkness. Perhaps he would find it, someday.

And when he finally succumbed to death, Alviss knew, without a doubt, that his soul too would descend into the darkness. Phantom's death-grip was too tight to escape.
