A horrible, horrible thing has started. It's called the Hunger Games. Each year, we must fight to death while being filmed. Our names get picked in the reaping. Today is reaping day. I'm not sure who won the last Hunger Games, because my mother and I refused to watch. My brother, Lenny, is eighteen. It's his last year, I think. I don't know a lot of things because The Hunger Games just started a year ago. I am from district 4, and my name is Iris. I am 16. My little sister, Madana, enters in my room and sits on my lap.
"Iris, will you or Lenny get reaped?" This little girl, who cannot yet say three properly or can't spell her own name, knows the word "Reaped"
"Madana, it's not us that choses. Now, try to not think about it. Go with mother. I'll be out to eat breakfast in a minute." Madana skips out of my room like it's a normal day. She's trying to make me feel better, I thought. I might be reaped! How can I feel better?
"Oh, Iris. We were waiting. You look beautiful," Mother said. Lenny looked handsome, and mother and Madana had white dresses on.
"Morning," Lenny said with a yawn.
"Good morning. Could you please brush your hair?" Mother asked. Lenny nodded. Lenny came back and we sat down to eat breakfast. Fish and sauce. A great meal.
"Well, we better get going, now shouldn't we?" Mother said. I nodded and Lenny was out of the door by then.
"Welcome to our second annual Hunger games! My name is Kiara Moltena!" The lady said. Kiara. What a strange name. She had Orange hair and lips the color of the sea. She was dressed like the rest of the silly capitol people. I realized how much time had passed.
"Lady's first," Kiara said. I squeezed Lenny's hands. He squeezed my hands back, because we both didn't want to get picked. "Iris Oana!" Kiara squealed with excitement. I gulped, the tears filling in my eyes. I made my way, step by step.
"Now for the boys," Kiara said. She put her hand in the bowl, picking out a name. "Lenny Oana!" Oh no, now the tears were starting to fall down. I look at the crowd and see my mother holding Madana, trying to hold back her tears.
"I bet my hat you guys are related, am I right?" Kiara asked. Lenny and I nod.
"H-he's my brother," I say.
"Oh, how exciting!" Exciting? What's Exciting? Watching innocent, little kids die in front of the whole capitol? I give District 4 my probably last look. Because by the looks of it, I'm not coming out alive.
