She glared at his head, which was lowered and staring at his chest. Slowly, he lifted his gaze and looked at her, his face pained. The look broke her heart at once, but she wouldn't show her emotion. Not now. She didn't want him to know how she felt at a time like this. His mouth opened to speak, but nothing came out. He tipped his head—just a tiny movement—and spoke at a terribly quiet tone.
"Why..?" His lips barely moved, save for when he took a sharp gasp after speaking. A crease formed on his brow, and she finally lost the façade of anger. She sucked on her bottom lip and held back her tears, feeling the wind whip her hair wildly about. "Why?" he repeated, a bit louder. He lifted a hand to her face, letting it slide weakly to her neck. She burst into a fit of tight sobs, lowering her head a bit as an attempt to hide that she was crying.
"I can't tell you," she choked, shaking her head. He lifted his other hand and held her face, making her look at him.
"Jolene," he gurgled, "listen to me. I don't know what your intent for this was or if anyone set you up to it, but I'll have you know that I'll still sail the seas." On the last bit of his speech, his voice became low and foreboding. She nodded quickly, biting both her lips. "I'll be the greatest captain ever and I'll have my treasure. The sight of my ship will strike fear into other pirate's hearts." He grabbed her shoulders tightly and began to shake a bit. His voice turned into a tiny whisper, so he moved his mouth close to her ear. "I will live forever," he grumbled through clenched teeth. His fingers loosened their grip as he began to fall back, clawing at her shoulders for support. "I… will never die…" Almost gracefully, he collapsed and the sword she held slid out of his chest, his blood dripping from the blade to his clothes. Her hands shaking, she dropped the sword and stared at him, frozen in fear and unable run. Dropping to her knees, she held her head and began to sob. She didn't know what else to do.
After all, she had just killed the man she loved.
