As I said on Deviantart, this is the first fic I've managed to write in weeks, so it probably isn't up to par, but I still think I like the way it came out.

The back yard is littered with splashes of red and orange and gold, fallen from the ancient trees that line the back fence and that were missed when James did the raking earlier. Lily stomps through them on her way to the gate, delighting in the crisp crunching sound they make under her shoes. Autumn has come early this year, invading the last few days of August with its chill; in just two days, she'll be back at Hogwarts for her sixth year, with all the friends that she has missed over the summer.
The gate swings open before she reaches it and Albus stumbles through, his cheeks red from the cold and his feet clumsy from laughter. Behind him, Scorpius follows, hands in his pockets and a sly smirk on his face that tells Lily that he is the source of Al's amusement.
He brother strides up to her with a smile and hugs her tight, lifting her off her feet and spinning her around as though he hasn't seen her in weeks. Then he drops her in a mound of leaves, sending James' carefully made pile scattering in all directions as she shrieks in protest, and both he and Scorpius double over in laughter. She glares at them, and after a moment they both reach down, grabbing her hands to pull her up, but she yanks them down instead and leaps up to run across the lawn toward the safety of the house, laughing at their splutters of mock outrage.
Scorpius catches her just before she reaches the porch, wrapping his arms around her waist and lifting her off her feet, holding her against his chest as though she weighs nothing at all, while behind him Albus has collapsed back into what's left of the leaf pile, staring up at the sky as though he's never seen it before, with his arms behind his head and his lips quirked in a slight smile. Scorpius chuckles in Lily's ear and presses a light kiss to her temple before gently releasing her, and with a devilish smirk, murmuring,
"Gotcha."
