You Must Love Me
"Make her last moments happy."
Plato nodded mutely and carefully stepped into the dimly-lit den. Almost immediately, he was kneeling beside the bed, head bent over her delicate paws. He was determined she would not see the tears threatening to spill as Jenny's words ran through his mind.
She put a paw under his chin and lifted his head. "Don't. It's all going to be fine now."
Plato nodded and smiled weakly. She always could read his mind. "It will be fine."
Softly, she began to sing:
"Where do we go from here?
This isn't where we intended to be
We had it all
You believed in me
I believed in you
"Certainties disappear
What do we do for our dream to survive?
How do we keep all our passions alive as we used to do?
"Deep in my heart, I'm concealing things that I'm longing to say
Scared to confess what I'm feeling
Frightened you'll slip away
You must love me
You must love me
"Why are you at my side?
How can I be any use to you now?
Give me a chance and I'll let you see how nothing has changed
"Deep in my heart, I'm concealing things that I'm longing to say
Scared to confess what I'm feeling
Frightened you'll slip away
You must love me
You must love me
You must love me."
She smiled at him. "It's my time now."
Plato nodded and forced a smile, trying not to cry – trying to stay strong for her.
With one more effort, she sang a final stanza:
"Don't cry for me, dearest Plato
The truth is I'll never leave you
Though it may get harder to believe me
I've always loved you
And always will do."
Her eyes closed, and Plato knew it would be for the last time. He tenderly kissed her on the lips, and, before breaking down completely, managed to sing to the same tune as her first line:
"I'll always love you, too, Tori."
Disclaimer: I do not own any of these characters - they are the creations of the wonderful Andrew Lloyd Webber or whoever happened to think them up. (Jennyanydots is, of course, owned by the incredible T.S. Eliot, without whom there would be no 'CATS'.) The only thing I own is the story, which is protected in my name under Australian Copyright Law dating back to 2009.
