I don't own anything. I'm striving to be okay with this.

From Season 1 taking place after The Damn Donna Reed episode. I think. The one where Emily gets Lorelai to confess she might have feelings for Luke. Also major mentions from Rory's Two Birthdays.

Red Meat

Lorelai sat in the diner, waiting for Rory, her fingers running around the rim of her mostly empty coffee cup. Her eyes lazily followed Luke around the diner as he went about taking orders, delivering food, and jumping from the short-tempered-Luke to the smooth-talking-charming-Luke to those he didn't see on a daily basis. As she watched him, her mind drifted back to the conversation she had had the night before with her mother when she had confessed that maybe - just maybe - she had feelings for the man. One of the only men who was proving to be a constant in her life.

If she paused to think about that - if she wasn't too busy thinking about other aspects of their relationship - she would have realized that in a lot of ways, he was the first.

But she wasn't thinking about that. She was too busy remembering how her mother had coaxed the admission out of her before asking her what she was thinking. She was remembering her mother telling Luke he was an idiot for reasons she suspected was related. She was remembering how Sookie hinted at the possibility after his coming over to her her find Stella. She was remembering how she had thought he was going to ask her out more than once. She was remembering when her mother had said he was looking at her like she was a porter-house steak…

She sighed, sitting straight, looking away from the man who seemed to have yet notice her gaze following him around.

That was the issue right there. He hadn't noticed.

He hadn't asked her out. And she knew that wasn't about to change, no matter how many kinds of steak she appeared to him to be. After all, when you got right past the flirting and the looks and the rumours, there was one fact that Lorelai couldn't forget. Luke Danes didn't eat red meat.
