Notes: Thanks to http://michelle2007. and http://i-speak-tongue. for the great beta job! No warnings other than I can't believe I wrote something so adorably cute! While I was working on a new story, I made reference to an event that had happened when Sammy was 5 and Dean had turned 10. That then demanded a story of its own and so here it is.

A Glimpse of Blue

Sammy knelt at the small coffee table concentrating for all he was worth. He wasn't good at writing yet, but he was trying. Every once in a while he'd get frustrated, but Pastor Jim was always there to help him with whatever letter or word he was having trouble with. When the phone rang, Sammy stopped working and looked over as Jim answered. After speaking briefly and nodding a few times, he hung up.

"Good news kiddo, you're dad and brother will be home tomorrow!" Sam nodded and doubled his efforts on getting the project done. After he was finished, he joined Pastor Jim in the kitchen.

He was too short to reach the counter, but Jim picked him up and had him sit on the countertop while he measured out the needed ingredients. He let Sammy add stuff into the big bowl, which made the little 5 year old grin. Sammy was so happy to be helping with this new project. Once it was all mixed together, Sammy sat and happily licked the bowl mostly clean. Jim went over his writing, proclaiming that it was perfect. Sam hated waiting, and really wished his brother was home. In order to distract the excited 5 year old, Jim turned on his favorite cartoon. The two sat and watched Thundercats for a while before dinner.

The next day, an exhausted John and an equally tired Dean came through the front door. As soon as Dean walked in, Sammy jumped up and yelled "SURPRISE!!" He raced over to his brother and held up a blue piece of paper.

"Read it! Read it!" Dean took the paper, frowning slightly. He looked at it.

"Dear Dean. Happy birthday to the bestest brother ever. Love Sammy."

Pastor Jim walked in with a chocolate cake. John looked at him curiously. It was March 1st, and Dean's birthday was January 24th. And they had never celebrated birthdays. Not after the fire. Jim shrugged. "It was Sammy's idea."

Dean didn't bat an eye he just bent down and hugged his brother. "This is the best birthday ever Sammy, thanks!"

Sammy hugged his big brother back tightly, a huge grin lighting up his face.

18 Years Later

Sam couldn't really see what his brother was doing from where he was sitting. It sounded like he was looking for something though. "Lose something?" he asked. Dean jumped guiltily.

"No," was his short reply.

"Ok." Sam shrugged and went back to browsing the webpage he was on.

Dean knew he had it in his bag. He just had to find it. Finally he saw a glimpse of blue. He grinned as he pulled the laminated paper to the top. There, preserved forever, was a blue sheet of construction paper. On it was written simply "Dear Dean. Happy Birthday to the bestest brother ever. Love Sammy," and a picture Sammy had drawn of him and Dean. Dean had kept it all these years, pulling it out every March 1st to read it. Sammy had been in pre-school and the teacher had made a big deal about another kid's birthday. Since they had never celebrated one, he decided he wanted to make Dean something for his birthday. Since he didn't know when that was, he picked a day, thinking that was what you did. Later when Sam had found out more about the whole birthday thing he had been embarrassed, but Dean had assured him it had still been his best birthday ever. Smiling to himself, he carefully put it back in the bottom of his bag. Turning to his brother he asked, "So this thing we're hunting, figure out how to kill it yet?"
