A/N: This is actually my 2nd story, and I know it's a little short, but my other one has a song in it and I guess I'm not really supposed to put that in? Anyway, here goes, my first posted story.
Interruptions and Phone Conversations
By JackO'NeillIsTheMan
Sam was a little worried. What if they hadn't been interrupted? She liked Agent Barrett, she really did, he was a nice guy. But he wasn't her guy. And when he asked about Pete it had taken a lot of her control to keep a mostly blank, noncommitical look on her face.
Oh, then, just when she thought he was done (his pause had raised her hopes), he spoke again with that little hint of hope in his voice, asking if no more Pete meant that she was single again. By then she was so tensed, all she could manage to think of to say was that damned, "Not exactly," which had only been squeaked out, anyway! Sam knew they had agreed not to tell anyone yet, it was nobody's business but theirs, but, "D'oh!"
He answered the phone on the third ring. "O'Neill."
"Oh, Jack. I'm sorry, but I couldn't come up with anything else and he caught me off-guard and it's not like we thought we'd need a cover story, but if we hadn't been interrupted..."
"Whoa! Sam, sweetheart, slow down. What in the world are you talking about? Who caught you off-guard, what cover story, and what is this about "if we hadn't been interrupted?"
-sigh-"Agent Barrett. The Op we had to find B'aal? We were in the surveillence van and he asked me how Pete was. I, of course, told him it was way over. Then he said he was sorry, but after a pause, he asked me, sounding all hopeful (to which I have to say, when did that happen?), whether or not that meant I was single again. And all I could think to say, all I could come up with, was, "not exactly," not exactly! "
Driving home from his office at the Pentagon across the country, Jack let out a small, smothered laugh. "Sam, that's okay, you didn't tell him anything and..."
"No! You don't get it! He's NID, he could find out, and then all our privacy will go to hell, not to mention how incredibly upset Daniel and Teal'c will be when they find out we didn't tell them first! You know Daniel, he'll be so hurt, he'll think we didn't trust him to keep our secret!"
Jack, finally realizing how upset this had made his wife, became serious. "Sweetheart, look, I really doubt Agent Barrett will go to such great lengths to find out why you won't date him.."
"But..."
"Ah-buh-bup! BUT, even if he does, I doubt he'll go spreading it around. I never liked him tons. (Of course that was mostly because he was always hitting on you. Yes, that's when it happened, the first time he met you.) I always thought he was a pretty all right guy, though, and I don't think he would do anything to deliberately hurt you or us."
-sigh-"If you say so, Jack."
"I do say so. I do think, though, that if it bothers you so much about what might happen if Danny and T find out, and how they might feel, that you should just tell them. Except, don't tell Mitchell, I like the kid and all, but he's a bit hotheaded, he might blurt it out at a bad time. Plus, he may be good and a part of the 'new' SG-1, but he's more like extended family, not our immediate family."
A small giggle escaped Sam at this metaphor.
"No giggling, Colonel."
"Jaaack! "
