He would lead the girl to believe that he was talking about the one game he played with the Beldam - the cat-and-mouse game, with him avoiding her and still coming and watching the girl.
But there was another game. This game had earned him three notches on his ears. This game was a wild betting game, one he had lost three times.
This game was led into by the cat-and-mouse game, as he had to get here to watch the girl.
This game might soon kill her.
So would he tell her the truth? The real truth?
No. Sometimes it's best to not say something important.
All she needed to know about was the game.
Even if it was the wrong idea.
