Five year old Bella grumbled as she was placed on the hood of a great big red truck. It was old, dirty, and hadn't run in years. Her father was busy talking to another man, Billy, and she was sitting on top of the hood to be kept "out of trouble". She was, quite frankly, bored, and greatly hated both the dirt on the hood, and the spider that was crawling against the window of the truck.

She listened to her dad and his friend for a moment. They were talking about parts, grease, and what it would take to get the thing she was sitting on back in working order. All she wanted to do was get down on the ground and play, but it seemed that her dad was to busy talking to listen.

Bella turned her attention to her doll instead. Maybe she could pretend or something with it. She started making the doll dance, because it was funny to watch as the doll's eyes flicked up and down and the arms flapped back and forth. She concentrated so hard on making the doll dance that she didn't notice the little boy who was playing beside the truck. She also didn't realize how close to the edge of the truck she was – and she couldn't help but scream with disappointment when her doll fell from her arms and down on the ground. That brought her Dad and Billy's conversation to a halt. When everyone else had turned to look at her, the little boy toddled over and picked up Bella's doll. He waved it up in the air at her, and she snatched it from his hands.

It was twelve years later, and the same doll still sat in a place of honor on Bella's chair in her room. Jake paused one day to pick it up and stare at it.

"You still have this old thing?" He asked, turning it over in his hands and examining it. "I remember picking it up for you when..."

"We first met." Bella finished for him, laughing. "Yes, Jake, I still have Baby-Sue. She was my favorite doll at the time, and well, she led me to a rather important friend."

"I wonder who that could be?" Jake deadpanned, a twinkle in his eyes.

"It was you, silly!" Bella laughed, throwing a pillow from her bed at him. "Now come back over here and finish your homework, or Billy will kick my butt cause your grades are slipping!"

Jake grinned, placed Baby-Sue back in its spot of honor, and sat down beside his Bell.
