Happy Mother's Day everyone! This is written for my mom, who is a fellow Trekkie, and all around awesome person. (Well, sometimes, anyway . . .XP) I'm sending her the link to this- she'll probably email me back a list of all the grammar and punctuation errors I made. Just kidding! (actually I wasn't)
It's a bit short- hope you enjoy!
Disclaimer: I don't own Star Trek- I do have a Spock Plushie though . . .
Mother's Day.
A simple enough holiday. Quite human, in Spock's opinion. He had researched it after Lieutenant Uhura had mentioned sending her own mother a card. It was rather odd, he thought, that he had not heard of it until now. He had been living among humans for quite some time now; surely someone would have mentioned it in his presence? Although after reading it's history in the Enterprise's archives, he had found it was a rather antiquated practice that most likely lost popularity during the Eugenics War.
Humans. Always so violent.
But, the research of the holiday had made him . . . curious. His mother had never mentioned it to him, but, living on Vulcan, it would have been improper to celebrate the so-called "Hallmark" holiday. But, was Amanda aware of its existence?
Perhaps, he thought, it would be prudent to send her something in acknowledgement. It could not hurt.
A card and flowers would be the most traditional method, although a letter would be most practical.
He wrote a letter.
He chose to address the letter "Dear Mother," instead of his usual "Lady Amanda," which was the most proper, and more Vulcan way. He detailed all the events that had occurred on board as of late. There was quite a bit to tell, actually. His new captain was quite . . . odd. Extremely illogical, even by human standards, and also very determined to do things his own way. Dr McCoy had also noted that he was what one would call a "ladies man," although Spock was unsure what exactly the phrase implied.
He inquired about her health, and how she was enjoying the Ambassador's conference on Earth that Sarek had been invited to, along with other pleasantries.
Over all, the most difficult part was the end. He was unsure of how to sign it. Normally, he would simply sign his name, but as this was a "Special Occasion," and he had already used a different salutation, thus, it would be most logical to change the closing as well.
Of course, he was aware that the proper human closing for a mother or close relative would be "Love," and their name, but that would not be appropriate for him, a Vulcan.
He pondered for a moment, then finally decided.
A moment later, he sent the letter.

Amanda smiled as she read through the stiff letter from her son. She missed him- it had been a long time since she saw him last, but she could easily imagine him standing before her with hands clasped behind his back as he rattled on about everything he had done, as if he was composing a report for school.
When she got to the end though . . .
She swallowed and read the words aloud
"I am very fond of you, and feel your absence often. Happy Mother's Day"
Amanda sniffed, wiped at the corner of her left eye, and quickly printed the letter.
This was going in her scrap book for sure.
"I'm very fond of you too, Spock." She whispered quietly to herself, as she rose.
~End~
