Remus Lupin admired his Christmas tree in the flat that he shared with Sirius Black. The tree was lit up with twinkling lights and the presents were wrapped in shiny red and silver paper covered with snowmen. It was exactly half-way between full moons, and Remus felt great. The mug of hot chocolate in his hands was still steaming with marshmallows floating at the top. His lover wrapped his arms around Remus from behind and snuggled his face into the werewolf's neck. This was perfect.
It was the first year after their graduation from Hogwarts and the first holidays that they were spending together with just the two of them. The house was warm and cozy, and all Remus wanted to do was snuggle up next to his lover and relax. "You ready for bed?" he whispered as Sirius placed a small kiss on the crook of his neck. He turned Remus around and gave him a sensual kiss. "Not yet. Moony…could we open one present tonight? Just one!" He pleaded like an excited little kid and Remus laughed. That kiss was Sirius' way of buttering him up, because he knew Remus couldn't say no after that.
"Fine. But just one!" Sirius squealed and looked at the presents eagerly to decide which one he wanted to open. "But I get to pick which one you open." Sirius pouted but didn't complain. At least he was still getting a present. Remus handed him an envelope and Sirius resisted the urge to protest. He decided against it, however, because Remus looked incredibly excited about this gift. It must be one special card. He opened it slowly to savor the anticipation and pulled out two certificates-one with the word 'Padfoot' on it and one with the word 'Moony' on it. He furrowed his brow and looked at his lover in confusion.
"It's the certificate for your star. There was already a star named Sirius, so I used Padfoot instead. I also got myself a star right next to yours so that no matter what happens, we will always be together." Sirius' eyes began to water. "I love you so much, Remus." The werewolf smiled and kissed him sweetly. Sirius dired his tears and picked out a present for Remus to open. "Here, open yours." Remus looked at the envelope Sirius had handed him and wondered what it could be. He had absolutely no idea. He pulled out a picture of the Colosseum and looked to Sirius for an explanation.
"I know you've always wanted to go to Rome, so I booked us a hotel for a week during the summer. We can see every place you want: the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, the dome of St. Peter's Basilica, anywhere you want." It was Remus' turn for his eyes to water and he hugged Sirius. "Thank you, Padfoot. I love it, and I love you." He kissed him and the taste of hot chocolate mixed with the salty taste of the tears on their lips. They smiled with genuine happiness as they cuddled in front of the fire. "Happy Christmas Eve, my love."
