The Man I Thought I Knew
The hospital room was quiet when David slipped in. Megan and Don had gone home already but he couldn't leave…not yet. Something was still very wrong with all of this. He slowly sat down in the chair next to the bed. Colby was laying still, the machines beeping every now and then; regulating his oxygen, monitoring his blood pressure.
"I just don't get you, man," David whispered, elbows resting on his knees. He didn't get a response but then again, he wasn't expecting one. He could see it all in his head, playing over and over as if his mind was set to repeat.
He rushed into the cabin on the boat to see Colby tied to the chair, his body slumped over. The needle stuck out of his chest ominously. He barely heard Don read off the label from the small vial. All David cared about was keeping Colby alive. He pulled the needle from Colby's chest and started to fight with the restraints. Somehow David managed to get Colby on the ground and started CPR.
"Damn it, Colby, stay with me. Wake up," David shouted, pressing as hard as he could to start Colby's heart pumping again.
"Stay with us," Megan called, trying to wake Colby up as well. David pressed down harder, hoping against hope it would be enough to save him.
David looked down at his hands for a minute. He knew it would be a day until Colby would wake up but there was so much he wanted to say to him. So much he wanted to apologize for.
"I just wanted to say…I know I was harsh back there…interrogating you," David breathed.
"You would have done the same. Everything we had…it was meaningless. At least it seemed that way," he continued, not caring he was the only one talking.
"I wish I could say let's just put it all behind us be you know we can't just as well as I do," David sighed. He leaned closer, gently placing his hand on top of Colby's. His gaze flitted to the doorway, making sure no one was coming by.
"I guess it was a good thing you were an expert at keeping secrets," he mused. No one had known about them. Maybe that's what had made David so angry before; knowing he'd been lied to on more than just a professional level. He let out a sigh and started to stand up when there was a sound that caught his attention. He looked down to see Colby's eyes flutter open. With his free hand, he pulled the oxygen mask off.
"I'm sorry about everything," he rasped out. David sat back down.
"Go back to sleep. We can talk about this another time," David said, trying to reposition the oxygen mask. Colby grabbed David's hand and stopped it.
"Look at me," Colby coughed. David leaned in closer.
"Don't make me regret saving your life, Granger," he whispered, a smile creeping onto his lips.
They stared at each other for a minute or two before Colby leaned up and captured David's lips in a quick kiss. David pulled away and pushed the oxygen mask back over Colby's nose and mouth. He stood and after giving Colby's hand a squeeze ducked out of the room.
