The over-whelming sense of fear Connor had felt earlier that afternoon stayed with him throughout the rest of the day.
To think, to be told by Jess that Abby's signal came from the monster broke his heart, his mind, his soul. After all they'd been through; Stephen's death, Helen, Cutter's death, the Cretaceous Era... To die whilst out doing the job they loved and knew... What death could be worse?
Even knowing that Abby, his Abby, was sitting safe and calm beside him, Connor could still feel the fear, the pain, the anger and the hurt. Unconsciously he gripped the steering wheel of the black four-by-four tighter as he tried to push the unwelcome thoughts from his mind.
Abby still saw: their time in the past had trained them to notice the small things.
She smiled reassuringly at him, and rolled the window down. The soft breeze ruffled her hair, and Connor soon relaxed and reached for her hand. At peace again, they drove on in silence.
