Shadows Where None Should Be Found
Shadows have their place in the world. How else would we know where the light is? But make no mistake, there are certain places were shadows have no right to be. The trouble is, with this war, they've been sneaking in.
I noticed them first the night you had that nightmare. You woke up screaming and sobbing and clutching my arm. You looked so pale, so frightened, so vulnerable. And that's when I saw them, smeared beneath your formerly luminescent eyes, marking a loss of innocence that I should have protected at all costs.
With all my kisses and my whispers, my warmth and my love, I could not make those shadows go away.
As time passed, bringing only more bad news and suffering, shadows wormed their way into an old nesting ground, a place that had been closed to them since I met you: My heart. I could not see your pain without wanting to return it a thousandfold. Not to you, though! I could never hurt you. But the others, the ones who had caused my love to suffer... I wanted to make them scream. I wanted to make them beg for death, just so the pain would stop. These dark shadows infiltrated my heart, turning it black as my namesake. I wanted to make everything else disappear, until only the two of us were left.
For all your love and beauty, for everything perfect and good about you, I could not want to make those shadows go away.
