"It's not my first bomb," Don scoffed, but Billy still raised an eyebrow at him.
"You sure? Because you're sweating like a schoolboy on prom night, Eppes. Relax. The bomb squad sent the robot in to take care of it. Piece of cake."
"I just asked because I wanted to make sure we're back far enough, okay?" Don said, glancing around. "I admit I haven't been involved in that many bomb scenarios, but it never hurts to be safe."
"Look, if you want to go back and hide with the little girls behind the tape line..."
"Shut up," Don snapped, impatient. "What's taking..."
The explosion was deafening.
Windows shattered, glass blowing out as the blast took out part of the motel room wall.
Behind their SUV Don and Billy covered their heads against the debris raining down on them.
Afterwards the paramedics took care of the minor cuts from the glass on the scene and Don wandered off, poking his ringing ears, trying to stave off the annoying sonic aftermath.
"First bomb?" one of the bomb squad team members asked, sympathetic, as he handed him a bag of ear plugs.
Don accepted them with a polite smile and shoved them in the pocket of his kevlar vest.
"Not my first bomb. Just my first actual detonation."
