Goodbye

The long trip home wasn't even worth the trouble. It was still daylight, and Derek Stiles was nervous. Since the day that he had become a surgeon he felt an argue to return and show his mother how good he was, show him his certificate like those days back at elementary school. He chuckled suddenly at the thought. Years before he went on his way to college, he would always show his mother his test scores, making proud in knowing someone else was of him. He now wondered what she was doing now.

It had been a couple of months since he had become an intern, his mother had not called to congratulate him. And he even wondered why he cared now. He had told himself after he stepped out of that house that he wouldn't turn back, unless the situation called it. And now he was heading back again. He stopped short, however. Derek's house was still a couple of blocks away. Did he dare take one more step? No, he was an adult now, but somehow he didn't feel right. Maybe no one felt the same when they abandoned their parents in order to have a new family of their own. In the years he had been in college he had visit her, that was a fact, but now? It was impossible to say, so he kept on walking. Might as well say it than admit it alone.

Derek finally reached the house he had so long ago lived in. knocking once, then twice. He was not answered. Sighing, Derek sat nearby the door, looking around. He could see the building of Hope Hospital towering nearby. Derek stood there waiting, until she arrived. Mrs. Stiles smiled at her son as she made her way towards her home. "Mom…"

"Hello, Derek, how are you?"

"I…was waiting for you….I want to talk…about something…" he seemed nervous, saying those words will be a big blow. "I…wanted to apologize.." The woman seemed suddenly looked confused.

"Apologize?"

"For not saying….goodbye…" A short silent engulfed them both, before a new smile appeared. She enveloped her son in a hug, one which Derek returned.

"Derek…there is nothing wrong with you saying goodbye…" she said smiling at her son. "meetings and farewells have always been a part of life, families can be apart but that doesn't mean they break. The saddest goodbye is when they truly go…" She paused suddenly, as if remember something. "I will miss you too, son. I guess I should apologize for not saying goodbye to you, either." Derek smiled, she was right, besides he lived in the same city too. "Now then," his mother said suddenly. "why don't we go inside and have a talk? I would like to hear all that medicine related talk of yours. Stay and chat a while, besides I recently made apple pie, I'm sure you will like it." Derek smiled, and once again followed his mother, to her he was still her little baby, and now a true man…that still liked apple pies.

I hope the ending didnt sound stupid...
