Chapter 1: Entrancing Light

Garish coughs were emitted from the back of his throat, piling inside his mouth until he retched and gagged from the pressure. Peeta dropped to his knees, fingering the grime under his calloused fingertips. His head snapped to the side, and he squinted. He looked carefully for it, but he couldn't find it. He couldn't find his light. There was darkness everywhere; he couldn't see his anyone or anything. He had been thrown into a dark room with nothing to look at it. There wasn't any light because that created hope. Hope was disastrous. The very creatures that had placed him here were afraid of this being; they couldn't stand the light that seeped through the clouds, bringing rays of hope to a person. They were inhumane.

Peeta squinted, desperately trying to find the light in this horrid world. There wasn't anything, and this made him cringe and wallow in self pity. Nothing was going to get better. There was no hope. His head lulled to the side, and he positioned himself on the ground. Pain rippled through his long limbs, but he just gnawed on his bottom lip and sealed his eyes. For a moment, there was complete silence. Then, the steady snores that erupted from his nostrils resounded in the room. He was asleep.

He was lost in a state of unconsciousness, where he could dream of anything. There he was free; there was light and hope and Katniss. Bliss washed over his sleeping form, and he lost himself in all of the light. There wasn't anything better than the light. It was completely entrancing.
