Chapter 1

I've always wondered if god (or gods) were real. I mean, science can't explain everything. Sorry, I'm Mariette Green. Anyways, I was just staring at the sky, pondering this question when a cheerleader sat next to me. How do I know? Well first of all she was still wearing her cheerleader outfit. Also she had a slightly predatory look in her eyes that only those girls who have make up plastered all over their faces and boyfriends pampering them have. "Hello, sweetie." That alone sent shudders downy spine. Creepy jerks. "Can you please leave me alone?" I rather rudely asked. I hated these kind of girls who thought everyone else were below them and were their servants. She snarled. "Well then." And bared her fangs. Wait, fangs? Suddenly, her appearance changed. She had chalk white skin, and her hair was literally flaming. Her fingers elongated into claws, one of her legs turning into a donkey leg, and the other transformed into bronze. Her blazing red eyes matched sharp fangs perfectly. Oh I'm screwed. Wait. Wasn't that an empousa from the Grrek book I was reading yesterday? Focus! I told myself. You are facing a creature who wants to eat you! Stop daydreaming! Stupid ADHD! I wonder if her existence meant gods exist... "Now, face your doom, puny demigod!" Wait demigod? Did that mean... She pounced. I let out a small scream and dropped on the ground, curling up and waited for the pain. Instead I felt dust land all over me. I open my eyes. A teenager holding a golden dagger stood above me. She had reddish brown hair, and startling blue eyes. She sighed. I swear I could hear her mutter "Probably a daughter of Ceres..." Somehow I know who Ceres was. Goddess of agriculture, harvest and the seasons. I looked at her puzzled. She said, "Have you heard about Roman Gods before?"

Along the way to Camp Jupiter, a camp for freaking Roman demigods, I learned her name was Gwen. She told me all about camp, monsters the gods, and the wars. It didn't make sense, but also explained why my dad always seemed to think I would leave him one day. When I thought about I immediately remembered I forgot to tell him I was going to Camp. As if hearing my thoughts, she turned around and said, "Don't worry, we can IM your dad later." We didn't speak for the rest of the ride, Gwen driving and me tapping on the chair staring out the window.

I learned I was as Gwen predicted a daughter of Ceres. I saw my siblings all had my brown hair and shining green eyes. I joined cohort 5, which Gwen had once been centurion of. I wan to be a centurion too after a few years.
