Kyra's POV
"OMG! Nick, did you see the size of that one?" I yelled over my shoulder as Nick followed closely behind.
"Wow, he was huge!" Nick says in amazement. I laugh and slow down a little, not sure which way the bear went. I hear some noises to my left and I glance at Nick. He is looking through the trees near the sounds.
"Do you see the bear?" I ask him.
"Nope, I see something better." He says. He crouches down a little and moves quietly through the forest. Even though it has only been two years since his birth, he has grown a considerable amount. He stalks his prey with practiced stealth. I follow behind him and see a full grown buck just beyond the trees in a clearing. Nick has always preferred deer when we went hunting.
Suddenly, our target looks up, startled and dashes off and away from us. Nick gives a low growl and runs after it. Laughing, I chase after Nick. He takes a sharp turn, following the buck but I am not far behind.
After bursting through the opening in the trees and into a clearing, I turn to follow Nick but a group of people catch my eye. I stop in my tracks and turn around. I take a step forward before realizing something is missing -heartbeats
I immediately go on defense since there is clearly more of them than there is of me. I glance behind me but I dared not keep my eyes off the group of vampires for too long. I see Nick a few meters away and quickly put my body between him and the threat.
Someone, a woman, takes a step towards us. A growl forms deep in my throat, a warning.
"We will not hurt you," an angelic voice said,
"We just want to talk, said another one, though this one was much deeper.
Vampires don't react well upon meeting Nick. So I try to stay away from them if I can.
"We don't want any trouble," I announce. "I didn't realize this territory has been claimed," I took a step back, keeping Nick behind me the whole time. "We will be leaving now." I take another step toward the trees. Toward safety.
"It's no trouble, please," a different voice rang out, this time a woman's.
I groan inwardly.
Someone takes a cautious step towards us. I make no move to stop them and they take that as an invitation. Within milliseconds, the whole group is before me. The each had matching gold eyes a strikingly good looks. The eyes are unusual but the good looks is a common vampire feature.
"Sorry to be so pushy, it's just that you look very familiar and its not common that I forget a face…" a male voice said. "Kyra?"
I look up sharply, crouched with my teeth already bared. "How do you know my na-" I stop and stand up straighter. "Carlisle?"
"Ahh so it is you." He takes a step forward and gives me a hug. At first I don't respond, started to see someone I'd thought had long since died.
I guess he did die…just not in the traditional sense, I thought.
Carlisle took a step back. "It has been quite a few years since we last spoke, Kyra"
"Yes. It has been a while."
"Well, I believe you know how I lived well past what I considered humanly possible. But, you have a heartbeat, so excuse my confusion."
"You're excused." I say. I turn quickly and grab Nick's hand. But before I could say my farewells, a woman's voice stopped me this time.
"Won't you stay? I would love to get to know one of Carlisle's…old friends"
