Arthur Kirkland stood by the entrance to the wide green field. He looked as he normally did, with large eyebrows and a nice-looking suit. He wore a red tie and a small flag pin on his lapel to show support for his team. However, if you looked a little bit closer, you could see that his eyebrows were raised a fraction, and his gaze was empty. He was in shock. The game was over.
No, he hadn't lost, but he hadn't won either. A tie. A one-one tie. With Alfred. Arthur scowled across the field at the happy American. Alfred was also in a suit, but his face was painted with stars and stripes and he had a stupid-looking hat on his head. He stood with his team and coaches, congratulating everyone and flashing his 500-watt smile everywhere.
That only made Arthur frown even more. Football was his game, and he'd a reputation to uphold. And it wasn't going well at all so far. Hell, the American had come up to him yesterday crowing about today's soccer match. He couldn't even say it right and he was still getting good at it, enough to rival Arthur.
Arthur pulled his gaze away before he made the American's jerseys start smoking. He glanced at his team, who were standing quietly, listening to their coaches and moving gradually to the entrance of the field, all ready to hit the showers. Well, there wasn't much he could do now.
His team started to file past him, all looking pleased enough with themselves. They'd played well after all, it was only a tie. Rooney still seemed a bit steamed, however; so Arthur let him pass without comment. The others he bumped fists with and held out his hand. With his head lowered, Robert Green walked past, and with nothing else to do, Arthur only patted his keeper's shoulder. It was a tough enough loss for the young man, and at his World Cup debut no less.
Arthur paused in following his team from the field before he glanced back at the Americans. Alfred waved at him, exuberant as in everything he did. Arthur rose a hand, but his green eyes pierced Alfred and made him freeze in his tracks. The message from the Brit was clearly read: This isn't over yet.
AN: Honestly, I'm extremely happy we tied. I'm American, but I felt it'd be interesting to write this from Arthur's point of view. The player's actions are all speculation of course. Ah, disclaimer: Alfred and Arthur belong to their creator (not me) and Rooney and Green belong to themselves. Good luck to everyone's next match and GO USA! *flag waving*
