A/N: Here's my newest GG drabble-y ficlet (though it's not really new considering it's being posted with a gazillion other updates). This kinda just poured out. It's about Dan and Serena's finale break up. I keep seeing that CW preview for the Fall Season with the scene on the dance floor and this was inspired. Can't Hold On Any Longer
"You can let go now."
"I don't want to."
He didn't want to let go. He wanted to hold her in his arms and never let her slip away. He wanted to make her understand that he couldn't lose her—how it felt to lose her little by little was unimaginable. He wanted her to be his. He wanted her to be his forever.
But he couldn't hold on any longer.
He had to let her go. Because, outside of the little fantasy he wanted to create where they had a perfect ending together, what they had was lost long before he stepped off that dance floor and walked away from her. It was dead weight, and holding on would only drag him down. Just like holding onto her when she wasn't his anymore, would only make it hurt all the more.
We all come to a point where we just can't hold on any longer. His just came a little sooner than expected.
