The sounds of the children's carefree laughter filled the park, engulfing and merging it into a cheerful place as they all played together in perfect harmony. The sun beamed down onto the joyful children, making the place seem like a paradise. All but one, had a smile on their young faces.
There was one, young girl who wasn't laughing, one who wasn't having fun shrouded in friends. One who was all alone, watching as the children kept playing on, totally oblivious to the girl who was longing to join them. The depressed girl sat in the shadow of a huge, ancient, oak tree, looking out at the children with an expression of envy and jealousy on her face. She sighed. Many words unconsciously fluttered through the young teen's head at the time, all of which had a similar meaning.
Isolation... Neglection...All alone...
Her long, chestnut- brown hair whipped gently around her face in the soft, cool, afternoon breeze. She looked down at the ground, causing her bangs which usually framed the sides of her face, to dangle over it, concealing her sorrow. She longed to have a caring family. Someone who she could just go home to and tell all of her problems too.
Someone who could just wipe away her tears of sadness and give her a reason to smile. How she longed to just have a friend...or to at least be acknowledged by someone.
This is what happened most days. The girl would come and sit all by herself at the lone, old tree and watch all of the other children. She wondered if they ever talked about her... maybe they did. But it didn't matter, as none of them were willing to extend a hand of friendship to the poor girl.
"Hey- you." The girl heard someone say. No way would it be to me she thought.
"Hey, I'm trying to talk to you, so you could at least look up at me." The ominous voice said. The girl widened her eyes and snapped her head up, causing the other child who confronted her to jump a little. Someone was talking to her- but why? she thought.
"Are you alright?" A boy with wavy black hair and fair skin, wearing an worn, sweatshirt with brown pants asked the depressed girl. She stared at the boy with shock and confusion.
"D-do you mean m-me?" she asked.
"Yeah, well who else."
The girls emerald eyes narrowed down at the boy, making him feel a little uneasy.
She looked down at the ground and sighed. "No one's talked to me in a long time." she said.
The boy was stunned. Why would no one talk to her? There is nothing different from her to me. We're both humans with beating hearts. It just confused the boy.
"Why?" he asked. The girl just shrugged. Why do they ignore me, she thought. Did I do something wrong?
"Well, I'm not no one." he said. The girl looked back up at him with a small smile.
"Hey!" another boy called out. "Why are you talking to her?"
"W-why not?" the kind boy retaliated.
"Don't you know what she is? A freak!" The boy's words made the girl's heart sting and caused tears to form in the corner of her eyes.
"You said it Mioshige! Just look at her eyes! Their not normal, their just creepy." another child added. It was true, her eyes were different from everyone else. Her eyes were emerald green with a slight shade of purple. But that can't be all they resent me for... she thought.
"B-but their just eyes" the kind boy said. "She's no different from-."
"Ha! She's not like us! She's more like a witch! A monster!" another child called, joining the conversation. Soon, all of the children were staring at the commotion that had filled the air. Some others joint in and insulted the girl, saying nasty things about her.
But she had had enough. Why were they always doing this to her? she thought. The girl boiled in anger. She couldn't control herself anymore. In the past, she had ignored her hatred for them. She kept her feelings hidden and brushed them off. But now, she had finally cracked.
The young girl slowly stood up and, with her head hanging down, walked over towards Mioshige, the boy who was first to insult her today. All of the children stammered back in shock.
Suddenly, the girl grabbed the boy's arm.
"What...did I do to you all?" she said, snapping her head up to look at this boy. The hatred and murderous intent in her voice was obvious. And her eyes...they beckoned for someone to try and talk back.
The children gasped and staggered back in shock. They looked at the girl, terrified of her.
"Why are you all so resentful? I didn't do anything wrong, did I?" she said in a low, mocking tone, increasing the strength of her grip. For too long the girl had kept all of this hatred down inside her, for far to long indeed.
"Stop! Hazaki! Your going to brake my arm!" Mioshige whimpered.
"Then tell me why...WHY?" she screamed at the closest boy, which happened to be the kind one who had tried to befriend her before. A feeling of guilt flowed through her entire body as the boy gasped. Hazaki also gasped and immediately let go of the other boy's arm. What did I just do? Now my life is going to be a living hell for sure! she thought.
Then there was silence... Everyone was quiet, taking in everything that had just happened.
After a while, the commotion died down until one boy raised his voice. "Mummy! Daddy! Hazaki is trying to hurt us again! Help us!" he yelled, all the while keeping a smirk on his face.
"I win." he spat. "Now run."
The girl, known as Hazaki, glanced around at all of the children. She saw the kind boy from before, shocked and scarred. When he noticed her gaze, he whimpered and looked at her with frightful eyes. She mouthed a small 'I'm sorry' and ran off as fast as she could.
Prologue First person (Hazaki)
I ran as fast as I could to my home, trying to avoid all of the torments and neglecting comments thrown at me by the townspeople.
"Monster!" one yelled. "Your just a hopeless stupid girl who is good for nothing!" At their words, tears started to drop from my eyes.
"Your just an experimental monster!"
"Don't you dare touch our children you here me!" a woman yelled while trying to hit me with a broom.
I forced myself to run faster now. Tears were now flowing down my cheeks as I ran to my so called home. Why do they treat me like this? And why did I threaten that boy!?
When I was a little girl, some of them use to peg stones and rocks near me, trying to scare me and get me to run away. And I didn't know why. As I grew older, it was still a mystery to me but I soon figured it out.
Ever since I was turned down by the orphanage, I felt hopeless. Then suddenly there was a group of scientists who said they would take me in. They seemed so heart warming and caring at first, so I eagerly decided to go with them. Little did I know that they couldn't give damn about me. They only wanted to use me for their experiments.
I rushed home and slammed the door open. I ran straight to my room, crying. I ran into my room and locked my door. "No visitors" I murmured to myself. I slumped down in my chair and started to watch an anime called Naruto. It was my favourite anime, but I didn't know what other animes were like either. It was basically the only thing I was allowed to watch. ...Secretly of course...
And somehow, it takes the pain away every time.
After watching about 5 episodes I started to feel a little drowsy. I guess I'm a little tired I thought. As I crawled to my bed, I heard a knock on the door and my name being called.
"Hazaki, are you awake?" I know that voice. It was Samantha.
"Yeah" I replied tiredly.
"Can you come outside please?"
"Su-sure, just give me a sec." Another experiment... great. I slipped out of bed and walked slowly to the door. There was no point in trying to fight it anymore. We had made a deal after all. They would supply me food and the means to live, while I would go along with their experiments. All of a sudden, I could hear rumbling on the other side.
"Wh-what is that sound?" I murmured. As I cautiously opened the door, I saw a flash of light racing towards me. I quickly dropped to my feet to avoid the impact from the mysterious object. What was that? I thought. As I turned around to see what it was, I gasped with shock when I saw a ninja headband from the Naruto anime. As I reached my hand out to touch it, a searing sensation burnt my fingers.
"Ow!" I squeaked as my hand jolted back. Bearing through the pain, I wrapped my fingers around it and picked it up. What the hell is this? Am I imagining this or... not?
Suddenly, it began to fade away out of my hands and into nothing. What the Hell? I must be dreaming? My head began to grow dizzy and my mind went foggy. I fell on my back, gasping for air. Then I heard the running...
I squinted my eyes as I gazed towards the door. There stood my so called family, all wearing gas masks.
"Well it looks like the immobilizing gas works well enough." I heard a voice say. That was Samantha. I'd know that voice from anywhere.
Another voice soon followed. "Hm... shit! Looks like her breathing is slowing down..."
"It seems as though the effect is too strong for her..."
"Hmph, it doesn't matter. Our experiments were done anyway. She was of no use to us. An she had to be finished off sooner or later."
"But now we don't know if she began to hallucinate or not. That was an important part to this project, after all."
"I'm sure we can find out, Samantha. It shouldn't be that hard too."
Their voices began to grow quieter and fade out. "We probably wouldn't get away with murder, even if she was nothing."
"Hmm," the main doctor hummed. "Perhaps an accidental fall down the stairs?"
"That could work."
The footsteps started up again but became quieter and quieter until they ceased altogether. Am I that useless? I thought. My mind was so messed- up I couldn't think anymore. Should I feel sad? I'm dying but... I was never loved in this world... No one will miss me. But...I had fought so hard to live!
My mind slowly began losing consciousness as I was left there, unable to move, with my dying thoughts. I was grateful that there was no pain.
As I took my last breath, the only thought that crossed my mind was that... ninja headband... I had seen earlier Naruto... huh? My head was washed over with relief and a bright, white light was shining in front of me. My.. favourite... anime... Haha... . Finally, I'm at peace...
As the last bit of consciousness seeped from my head, I had one, final thought.
Wouldn't it be funny, to live there?
A pairs of arms wrapped around my now lifeless body and dragged me outside. The scientist lackey stopped at the top and the stairs and looked at me with cold eyes. My glassy, dead eyes stared back at him and bored into his soul.
He shuddered. "Even after death you prove a struggle."
Then everything went black, for the final time.
