Chapter 1

October 14, 1994

9:32 P.M.

A mass of fluffy, brown hair rushed into the Gryiffindoor Common Room and to a small, waist-high table against the right wall of the room. A stack of notebooks and stray papers was hastily tossed onto the tabletop, and the chair quickly scooted out. From the couch in front of the fireplace, a wandering voice was heard.

"Whoa, Hermione, you seem to be in a rush." Harry was relaxing after a long day of classes. In his left hand was a bottle of pumpkin juice, and in his right, a handful of the worst tasting Bertie Bott's Every Flavored Beans, which he and Ron were daring each other to eat. Hermione whipped her head around and looked at the pair.

"Yes, actually, very, very much so," she snapped. She pulled a pen from the breast pocket of her uniform and started aggressively scribbling notes into the pages in front of her. "Professor Trelawney had me help her clean up for the day and I wasn't able get any of the history of magic notes, which is pretty important considering there's an exam tomorrow. Not to mention it's my worst subject this year."

Harry and Ron looked each other in the eyes, both knowing they wouldn't be hearing the end of this. Hermione hardly got this anxious, but when she did, she was extremely vocal about it.

"Just wing it or something," Ron said intently. "I mean, we all know you're smart, and there's probably nothing to worry about." As he was finishing his sentence, Hermione whipped a small and shiny object from her bag. Harry flinched with a wave of surprise that hit him.

"Hermione, is that... is that the time-turner?"

"I decided to keep it, just in case."

"You know how dangerous it is."

"Trust me, I know how to use it."

"I really, really don't think you should use that."

With one, two, three turns, the device began to let off a magical glow. On the fourth turn, Harry sprung off the couch and grabbed the spinning part, stopping it in its tracks.

"Harry! You can't touch a time-turner while it's working!"

The small hourglass grew brighter and brighter, keeping Harry and Hermiones' hands stuck tightly to it. Spurts of magic began violently shooting off into every direction. The dimly and warmly lit Gryiffindoor common room became illuminated with a shower of blinding light. The light surrounding the time-turner grew larger and brighter until it surrounded the two students holding it, and within a matter of mere seconds, they had disappeared.
