Prologue
Caroline curled into a tight ball as she tried, in vain, to stave off the pain. Make it stop. Please, make it stop. She whimpered as another ripple of pain wracked her body. The tears slid down her cheeks and she bit the inside of her cheeks in order to stop herself from screaming.
It took longer and longer to pass each time. Seventy-two hours, he had said. But she knew. Knew that even if under some miraculous circumstances, she did survive this, she would be nowhere near capable of healing from the mental scars. As did the scars on her heart.
The door burst open and light flooded in. She closed her eyes tightly, knowing that it was him. She felt the bed dip as he sat on it and a moment later she felt him brushing her hair away from her forehead. Another spasm rocked her body and he did nothing. No words of comfort. No arms around her. Nothing. When it stopped and she relaxed he simply said, "It'll be over soon," and promptly left the room, closing the door behind him with a bang.
