rain under the bridge in technicolor
Disclaimer: I own nothing
for baldy
He is locked out of the castle, or that's what he tells James when he walks into the Gryffindor common room with Evans, drenched and muddy and looking entirely suspicious. Not that they were doing suspicious activities because Evans is too much of a prude.
(That and he'd never dream of hurting her.)
And she doesn't see him and where does she get off? Her vibrancy is such a cliché as is his little attraction to her. It's not like she's perfect because she's not. James is blind to all of her little irksome quirks and she can be a coward and she can be impatient and the world is blinded by her charm because sometimes she's just too vibrant.
She comes looking for him out in the rain, something about her moral upbringing obligating her to search for lost causes in storms. He's drunk and he doesn't remember how he got a hold of the firewhiskey but even in the rain she's vibrant and it pisses him off.
"Get lost Evans, go snog Remus or something."
She looks outraged and Sirius doesn't understand why he doesn't say James, maybe because he's so painfully aware that she will be with James someday and the thought makes him want to throw up.
(Because she's just too damn bright.)
She's wet and she looks fairly ridiculous because she's very small and she's swimming in her robes and she's huffing and trying to think of a retort and she's absolutely adorable, she is.
James is his best friend, his absolute best friend and he'd never hurt James, not ever. And he has to keep telling himself that or he might just do something stupid.
"Black," Lily orders through clenched teeth, "Get up, everyone's worried about you."
He stays, lying on his back with his mouth hanging open, trying to take in the rainwater that tastes like firewhiskey.
"Sit down, Evans, take a load off."
And to his surprise she does and she's speaking to him very softly and he can't hear her over the buzzing in his ears, and he hates her because she doesn't even know that all she does is break hearts. Remus, and Snivellus, and James and him and she'll never get her heartbroken because she's so damn vibrant.
"Black," her voice is strangely pathetic, "Black, it's wet."
And he wonders why she's waiting for him and why she didn't bring an umbrella or her wand. She's rarely ever ill prepared and maybe she cares about him just a little bit more than she lets on.
"I bet you think I'm pitiful, don't you Evans?"
She shakes her head, and rolls her eyes, "Black I find you repulsive and arrogant, but you've never once been the object of my pity."
He rolls onto his side and stares at her through the sheet of rain and wonders if she's the reason other girls are so boring as of late. She's the reason for a lot of misery and a little part of him wishes that she'd never gotten that letter, and then maybe he wouldn't resent his best friend and he'd find a nice girl who wasn't the personification of Christmas colors.
"Let's go Black."
He follows her inside and reassures James, and drinks himself into a stupor when the curtains are closed.
(Because his heart breaks in her Technicolor)
For a friend with a fondness for SiriusLily. Reviews would be lovely...
