Gokudera had been listening to Haru's light snoring for what seemed like forever. The green lights on his bedside clock read the numbers 2:53, and yet he couldn't make his tired eyes close and drift into blissful sleep. Haru wasn't to blame for his inability to fall asleep. Instead, he blamed it on undiagnosed insomnia that he had earned after years of missions in the mafia.
He sat still, every night, never being able to sleep until at least four in the morning. It was long. It was mundane. It was annoying. And to add to his displeasure, he had to wake up at around 10:00 everyday. He had no doubt that he would sleep in later, but Haru woke him up by jumping on the bed, shouting happy things, and sending a clear message that he better get his ass up or else.
Tonight though, he thought he might try something different.
"Haru... Haru, wake up, please," he said into her ear. She stirred, barely, but didn't respond or show signs of coherency. "Haru. Wake up."
"Go away," she groaned, her hand raising to push his face away.
"Can you wake up?" he asked again.
"No... I really can't," she said.
"Really, Haru. I need to you wake up for me."
With an agitated growl, Haru sat up in bed.
"What?" she snapped, her eyes grainy and glassy.
"Well, good morning to you too, dear." he said jokingly. She shot him an icy glare. "I can't sleep. Do something about it."
"Yeah, Hayato. I'll get to pulling the solution out of my butt." she mumbled, rolling to lay back down. Gokudera pulled back her blanket, leaving her exposed to the open air. She sat back up and glared at him some more.
"I can't sleep," he stated once more.
"Geesh," She stretched her arms out. "Come here. Come on, don't be shy." she motioned with her hands, then held out her arms. Gokudera moved closer, and she wrapped her arms around him, layed back down, and stroked his hair with his fingers.
"What next?" she asked, closing her eyes.
"Just prattle on about something, like you normally do. That always makes me sleepy," he mumbled into her collarbone. She smacked his bare back, and he hissed from the sting.
"What the hell?" he asked, raising his head to look down at her.
"That's what you get when you talk to a sleepy lady like that," she retorted, grabbing his head and pulling it back down into her collarbone.
"What lady?"
She smacked him again, this time harder.
"I'm sorry, what?"
"Nothing..." he said, his own way of saying 'sorry'.
"That's what I thought. Now, you said to just talk about something? Okay then. Yesterday, I decide that..."
Her voice drifted to his ears, and the soft melody of her voice began to lull him. She talked about several things, bless her soul, and soon everything began to fade to black.
"-but Kyoko doesn't think that-... Hayato? Honey, are you still awake?" she asked gently, nudging him with her shoulder. He didn't say anything, and his breathing was even and long. Smiling, she stroked his hair some more and closed her own eyes, falling asleep to his steady breathing and the strong beating of his heart.
