Hello! Sorry for the lack of updates - I'm working on a multi-chapter story, so I haven't had much time to update small one-shots like this.
This is very short (I think the author notes are longer), but it was an idea that I really liked, and I couldn't help but run with it. Not to mention I grew up in major Trekkie family, and to have a FF account with a Star Trek story...
Disclaimer: I do not own what I do not own.
Dedication: To my mom, the biggest Trekkie I know and the greatest mom I could have asked for. Happy Mother's Day!
Captain Mathews
Captain Mathews slumped in the captain's chair, watching the inspection crew walk around the bridge.
The rest of her crew was nervous, even if they were hiding it well, but she had full confidence in them. Their ship, though damaged from a bad run-in with an undiscovered planet, was in better shape than most of the other ships docked for the surprise inspection.
"Captain Mathews," the leader of the inspection crew, Nathaniel Nickels, addressed.
Captain Mathews had always liked names that were alliterate. It reminded her of the way Captain Kirk had sounded to her, when she was young and scared and introduced to Starfleet for the first time. It was why, when she chose a new family name, she had chosen Mathews.
But Captain Kirk had influenced more than just her surname. While it had been Doctor McCoy - or Bones, as she had always thought of him - who had actually committed the selfless act that had saved her life, it had been Kirk who had first made her feel safe. And it had been the three of them - Bones, Kirk, and Spock - that were the reason Captain Mathews had joined Starfleet. Without them, she wouldn't have lived to have a career, and now she wanted to pass that kindness on.
"Yes?" Captain Mathews asked.
"You've passed inspection," Nickels reported, looking down at his tablet. "It would have been with flying colors, if there weren't three big holes in your ship."
Captain Mathews winced. Some things couldn't be prevented.
"Can I have a full name and rank for the documents?"
"Sure," Captain Mathews replied. "Captain Miri Mathews."
Just in case no one got it, Captain Mathews is the grown-up version of Miri from the episode Miri. I absolutely loved that episode, and it seemed to me that something like that would stick with Miri, even as she grew up. So, becoming a captain herself would be fitting.
Once again, this is dedicated to my wonderful mother, who is the reason I got into fan culture, and has supported my writing every step of the way.
