Not Him Again
"Hey James! Hey Lily!" called the approaching and breathless voice of Peter Pettigrew.
Oh great, James thought to himself, not him again.
Why did Wormy have to keep turning up on every single date he had with Lily? As much as he loved his mate, Peter was well and truly cramping his style. If his fellow marauder carried on doing this he would never get any further than kissing Evans and he wanted to so much more to the gorgeous, incredible, intelligent creature.
He mouthed an "I'm sorry" to his girlfriend, and turned to face his friend, planting a broad smile on his face.
"Peter," he said. "What are you doing here?"
"Errm, well, I just - wanted to talk to Lily – Vector's assignment is kicking my arse – and I thought she could – you know – help me out a bit," Peter mumbled, his eyes never leaving the ground beneath him.
"Oh thank goodness I'm not the only one having issues with it!" Lily exclaimed loudly. "I can't believe Vector expects us to ..."
James took himself off to one side, leaving Lily and Peter to talk about their grievances with the latest Arithmancy assignment from Professor Vector.
There was only one way he would be able to get rid of Peter for the evening and that was to send an emergency patronus to one of his friends.
James pondered for a moment on who to send it to. Ordinarily he would ask Sirius for help, but the sly dog was looking to get Mckinnon under him tonight and the last thing he wanted to do was be a cock block, and end up being no better than Peter.
That left only one person for him to call on. Remus Lupin. If anyone could understand his plight at this very moment it would be the wolf himself, especially since he'd had numerous dates interrupted by the forever alone marauder.
"Expecto Patronum," he whispered.
A silvery stag appeared before him, and he embedded an S.O.S message in it and sent it to Remus.
He spent a few moments watching the elegant form of his stag disappear into the distance, and sent a prayer up to whichever deity was watching over him to make sure Remus got here soon.
As soon as his patronus was out of sight, James shoved his wand back into his pocket and strutted back over to his girlfriend and Peter.
"So James, where are we going tonight?" Peter asked, bouncing up and down on his feet. "I was thinking we could sneak into Hogsmeade and hit The Hogs Head. I heard that it's three for the price of one on butterbeer until twelve."
The wizard threw a look in Lily's direction as if to ask what on earth Wormy was going on about, to which the witch just shrugged her shoulders and repeated James' earlier actions and mouthed "Sorry."
James flashed a smile Peter's way and said with faux enthusiasm, "That sounds great Wormy."
As the trio made their way towards the secret passageway into Hogsmeade, James couldn't help but think he, Remus and Sirius needed to help Peter get a girlfriend – or boyfriend pronto, because he was very quickly becoming a proverbial pain in all their arses, and James wasn't sure how much longer he could plant a smile on his face whenever he turned up.
