Author's note: So, there was a challenge going around on LJ where you put itunes on shuffle and you take the first ten songs that came up and write fics for them. So, with Spring Awakening as my muse, here is the first in the set. It's Thea centric, based on the song Change by Good Charlotte.

Change

The boys had taken a raft out. The sun was beating down on them, and Melchior Gabor, sweating with the effort of rowing, paused to take his shirt off.

From the top of the bridge, overlooking the action on the river, came a small, muffled squeal of excitement. There sat Thea, head peeking between the wooden bars and feet dangling over the edge. She'd come here every warm day since before she could remember, hoping to catch a glimpse of Melchior.

He'd noticed her one day, as he was eventually bound to. She'd been mortified, of course, and couldn't bring herself to show her face on the bridge for a whole week. Anna finally convinced her she was being silly, and Thea returned to her spot, one part of her wishing that the boys wouldn't be on the river, and a larger part hoping she would see Melchior. She'd missed him, she realized. She'd missed him and she, in her silly little girl way, hoped that he'd missed her, too. And that was the day he smiled at her. Just a simple, quick glance up at her, accompanied by a grin. Just the briefest acknowledgement of her presence, but it was the greatest gift in the world, because it had been just for her.

Melchior didn't smile at her anymore, though she returned to the bridge every day, hoping in vain that he would. He smiled, yes, but it was a dreamy sort of smile, intended for someone he could only see in his mind. Thea couldn't say who it was for, but she wished it was for her. And so she returned there faithfully, each day hoping that even if the smile was not for her, Melchior would turn it to her and see that she was the one he should have been smiling for all along.
