Mermaid
By Danielle Aucoin
Prologue
Anyone can tell you that if you were to walk down the street and ask any sane adult if they believed in mythical creatures, they would tell you that they were just that. Mythical. But if you were to walk up to a sailor or a hunter for example, he could tell you so many stories of mermaids or vampires or even werewolves. This is because they have seen these creatures. Known these creatures. Some even loved these creatures. This is the story of a young sailor man who fell in love with a mermaid.
What A sight!
Under a bright blue endless sky
Waves try to measure
The days that we treasure
Wave hello
And wave goodbye
"Phillip!" I heard my father yell. "Come here a minute!" As you may know by now, my name is Phillip. I am a 19 year old sailor in training. My father has been a sailor his whole life. He is known for the tales he tells of his days at sea. When I got to my father, he was staring intently at the water.
"What is it, father? You see something?"
"I thought I did but it must have been nothing. You stay here while I go get our lunch."
"Ok" I replied. A few minutes after he left, I felt something tug at the rod. I reeled in but there was nothing there. Suddenly, a girl popped her head out of the water. She was beautiful. She had long brown hair and the most amazing brown eyes. I heard my father call my name and turned my head for a second but when I turned back but she was gone with a small splash. Then my father was back with our lunches.
"Something wrong, son? You look like you just saw a ghost." He said.
"I think I did. I saw a girl in the water but she was gone almost as quickly as she came." He suddenly gave me a strange look and stood up walking to the side of the boat. He searched the water but finally decided that nothing was there. He then sat back down.
"Phillip, have I told you any stories of when I was your age?"
"A few."
"Well when I first started sailing with my father, I saw many strange things in the water, but one of the strangest was a girl. She would sit there and stare for a few seconds and suddenly would disappear. I thought at first that I was going crazy, but she kept appearing. Always disappearing as quickly as she appeared. One day she jumped all the way out of the water. She had a fin and a human torso."
"A mermaid?" I said doubtfully.
"Yes." And suddenly, I knew that this wasn't just an old fish tale because at that moment, I saw a flash of dark brown from the corner of my eye. A lock of brown hair, fluttering just above the surface of the water.
